La Liga Round 33: Obera lose to Gimnasia in the game between Top 4 teams

The game between Top Four teams took place in Obera. Second-best host Obera (19-8) was smashed by third ranked Gimnasia (20-8) 85-64. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Cuban forward Joaquin Mensia (198-1997, agency: Pro Sports) stepped up and scored 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and American guard Tyrone White (201-1990, college: CSUB) chipped in 13 points and 5 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American power forward Charles Mitchell (203-1993, college: Georgia Tech, agency: Slash Sports) with 16 points and 6 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Gimnasia have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. Obera at the other side dropped to the fourth position with eight games lost.
The game in Mar del Plata was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Obras (19-7) played at the court of 7th ranked Penarol (16-9). Obras defeated Penarol 92-78. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Penarol. The former international point guard Pedro Barral (187-1994) nailed 14 points and 8 assists for the winning side and Joaquin Rodriguez accounted for 20 points. Jose Defelippo (186-1997) came up with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Penarol in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Obras moved-up to third place. Penarol at the other side keeps the seventh position with nine games lost.
A very close game took place in Santa Fe between Union SF and San Martin. Nineteenth ranked Union SF (7-22) got a very close home victory over higher ranked San Martin (13-12). Union SF managed to escape with a 2-point win 74-72 on Monday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. The best player for the winners was Jeantal Cylla who scored 17 points and 6 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). At the other side the best for losing team was Emiliano Basabe who recorded 23 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Union SF moved-up to seventeenth place, which they share with San Lorenzo and Comunicaciones. Loser San Martin keeps the twelfth position with 12 games lost.

In the last two games of round 33 Platense destroyed Comunicaciones on the opponent's court 86-64. La Union managed to outperform Riachuelo LR in a home game 96-83.

Comunicaciones - Platense 64-86

Very expected game in Mercedes where 17th ranked Comunicaciones (7-22) was crushed by ninth ranked Platense (15-11) 86-64 on Sunday. The best player for the winners was American power forward DeMarco Owens (203-1996, college: Montevallo) who scored 20 points and 7 rebounds. Swingman Julian Morales (195) chipped in 14 points. Owens is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Platense players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Melvin Johnson (193-1993, college: VCU) who recorded 18 points and the other American import guard Skyler Hogan (196-1997, college: SEMO, agency: Pro Sports) added 17 points respectively. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Platense moved-up to eighth place. Comunicaciones lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the seventeenth position with 22 games lost. They share it with Union SF and San Lorenzo.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with thirteenth ranked La Union's (13-15) home victory over 14th ranked Riachuelo LR (11-16) 96-83 on Sunday. The best player for the winners was American guard Michael Henry (196-1995, college: Buffalo St.) who had a double-double by scoring 11 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. His fellow American import guard Thomas Cooper (196-1992, college: Calgary) chipped in 18 points and 5 assists. Four La Union players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Fortunato Rolfi (186-2001) who recorded 13 points and 5 rebounds and forward Mariano Fierro (200-1986) added 9 points and 7 rebounds respectively. A very close game took place in Santa Fe between Union SF and San Martin. Nineteenth ranked Union SF (7-22) got a very close home victory over higher ranked San Martin (13-12). Union SF managed to escape with a 2-point win 74-72 on Monday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. Union SF made 16-of-18 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game.
