La Liga Round 6 (Regular Season): Platense defeat Olimpico

There were just 6 rounds played in Regular Season of La Liga and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places. The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Olimpico (5-1) in Florida on Thursday night. Visitors were edged by second ranked Platense (4-2) 73-72. 26 personal fouls committed by Olimpico helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for the former international Eric Flor (190-1993) who saved his team from a defeat with 19 points. point guard Facundo Vazquez (185-1998) contributed with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American-Puerto Rican Devon Collier (203-1991, college: Oregon St.) replied with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds for Olimpico. Olimpico's coach Leonardo Gutierrez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Platense have a solid four-game winning streak. Despite that victory Platense went down to third position due to points difference, which they share with Regatas and Obera. Olimpico at the other side still keeps top place with one game lost. Important game to mention about took place in Comodoro Rivadavia. Third ranked Olimpico (5-1) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging 8th ranked Gimnasia (3-4) 83-80 on Saturday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Forward Patricio Tabarez (195-1991) scored 15 points and 5 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Alex Negrete chipped in 16 points during the contest. The best for the losing side was American guard Joshua Webster (190-1997, college: Missouri St.) with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Gimnasia's coach Martin Villagran tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Olimpico keeps a position of league leader. Gimnasia at the other side dropped to the ninth place with four games lost. Olimpico will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gimnasia will play at home against Quimsa (#6) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Regatas (4-2) against eighth ranked Obera (4-2) on Sunday night. Visiting Regatas was defeated by Obera in a tough game in Obera 91-95. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Regatas. Agustin Barreiro notched a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the effort. Even 21 points by Xavier Carreras did not help to save the game for Regatas. Regatas' coach Fernando Calvi let to play ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Obera moved-up to third place, which they share with Regatas and Platense. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 6: Boca beat Zarate on the road 79-73. La Union lost to Regatas on its own court 72-74. Winless Argentino unfortunately lost to Comunicaciones in Mercedes 82-87. Union SF managed to beat Argentino at home 92-80. Ferro was defeated by Zarate on the opponent's court 67-64. Boca beat Platense in a home game 87-72. La Union lost to Obera on the road 80-83.
The most impressive performance of 6th round was 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists by Luciano Guerra of La Union.



Zarate - Boca 73-79

No shocking result in a game when third ranked Boca (5-2) beat on the road 19th ranked Zarate (2-4) 79-73 on Wednesday. Boca dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Zarate's 26. They outrebounded Zarate 45-33 including 34 on the defensive glass. The former international point guard Jose Vildoza (191-1996, agency: Octagon Europe) notched a double-double by scoring 20 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and the former international Leonardo Mainoldi (205-1985) supported him with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Even 16 points and 5 assists by Agustin Brocal (191-1997) did not help to save the game for Zarate. Center Sebastian Chaine (201-1986) added 13 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Boca moved-up to second place. Newly promoted Zarate dropped to the fifteenth position with four games lost. They share it with La Union.
