La Liga Round 11 (Regular Season): San Lorenzo is upset by Platense

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in La Liga. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The game between third ranked San Lorenzo (9-2) and fifth ranked Platense (8-3) was the most important one in the last round on Monday night. San Lorenzo was defeated by Platense in a tough game in Florida 81-85. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of San Lorenzo. 30 personal fouls committed by San Lorenzo helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was point guard Facundo Vazquez (185-1998) who scored 23 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!). The former international Eric Flor (190-1993) chipped in 16 points. Forward Gaston Cordoba (200-1994) produced 17 points and 7 rebounds for the guests. San Lorenzo's coach Leonardo Costa rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Platense moved-up to fourth place. San Lorenzo at the other side keeps the third position with two games lost. Platense are looking forward to face Instituto (#8) in Cordoba in the next round. San Lorenzo will play at home against the league's leader Quimsa (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in Mercedes. Twelfth ranked Ferro (4-6) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 15th ranked Comunicaciones (4-8) 89-87 on Sunday evening. Forward Mariano Fierro (200-1986) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. Damian Tintorelli contributed with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American guard Marcus Thomas (191-1995, college: Rosemont) answered with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for Comunicaciones. Despite that victory Ferro went down to thirteenth position due to points difference, which they share with Obera. Comunicaciones lost sixth consecutive game. They dropped to the sixteenth place with eight games lost. Ferro will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Comunicaciones will play at home against Union (#18) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Formosa between La Union and Ferro. Seventeenth ranked La Union (3-8) got a very close home victory over higher ranked Ferro (4-6). La Union managed to escape with a 2-point win 79-77 on Tuesday evening. It was a great evening for Luciano Guerra who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points and 5 rebounds. Tomas Spano responded with 17 points. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. La Union maintains seventeenth place with 3-8 record. Loser Ferro dropped to the thirteenth position with six games lost. They share it with Obera. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Other games of round 11 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked Penarol was defeated by Independ.O. in Olivia 83-75. Zarate beat Regatas at home 73-66. Regatas won against Obras on the opponent's court 79-71. Boca unfortunately lost to Riachuelo in a home game 64-70. Quimsa rolled over Penarol on the road 98-75. San Martin defeated Union on its own court 80-67.

Independ.O. - Penarol 83-75

There was no surprise in Olivia where 20th ranked Penarol (1-10) was defeated by sixteenth ranked Independ.O. (4-7) 83-75 on Friday. Independ.O. made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. Independ.O. outrebounded Penarol 53-35 including 17 on the offensive glass. It was a great evening for Salvador Giletto (195-1993) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds. Swingman Joaquin Noblega (194-1997) helped adding 9 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. American forward Al Thornton (203-1983, college: FSU, agency: BIG) responded with 18 points and 5 assists and point guard Joaquin Valinotti (185-1998) scored 11 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Penarol players scored in double figures. Independ.O. moved-up to fifteenth place. Penarol lost ninth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with ten games lost. Independ.O. will meet Argentino (#19) in the next round. Penarol will play against Riachuelo and hope to win that game.

Four Zarate players scored in double figures. Zarate's coach Juan Anglese used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guard Franco Vieta (194-1992) responded with 15 points and 7 rebounds and naturalized Dominican forward Xavier Carreras (198-1994) scored 9 points and 6 rebounds. Zarate have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to ninth place, which they share with San Martin. Loser Regatas dropped to the sixth position with five games lost. Quimsa dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Penarol's 34 and made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game. Quimsa looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for swingman Emiliano Basabe (195-1992) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points and 5 rebounds. The former international power forward Tayavek Gallizzi (206-1993) helped adding 17 points. Five Quimsa players scored in double figures.
