Penarol keeps Thornton for another season

Al Thornton

Penarol Mar del Plata (La Liga) has re-signed the experienced 40-year-old American 203cm forward Al Thornton for the upcoming season. He was a team leader there last season. In 43 La Liga games, he recorded impressive stats: 15.9ppg, 5.6rpg, and 1.3apg. He was voted to Latinbasket.com All-Argentinian La Liga Honorable Mention, All-Imports Team, and League Player of the Week. The previous (2023) summer, he played at Club Atletico Olimpia Montevideo (Metropolitan) in the Uruguayan league.
In 2007, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers (NBA) in the first round (14th overall). He graduated from Florida State University, and it will be his 18th season in pro basketball.
Thornton is a very experienced player. He has traveled the world during his pro career, playing in ten different countries on three different continents (Asia, Latin America, and North America). Thornton has played professionally in China (Guangsha Lions), Japan (Magic), Philippines (Warriors), Puerto Rico (Brujos), Uruguay (Aguada), Venezuela (Trotamundos and Gaiteros), NBA (GS Warriors, LA Clippers, and Washington Wizards), South Korea (Sonicboom), and Big3 (3's Company).
Among many awards, his team was the regular season runner-up in Uruguay LUB in 2019. He was selected to the Latinbasket.com Venezuelan LPB All-Imports Team back in 2017. Thornton is close to retirement age as a player. It may be one of the last seasons in his extensive career, which he may end at Penarol.
