Jon Elmore's 3-point field goal put the Marshall Thundering Herd up on IBA Elite, 11-1, early in a Monday game in the Summer of Thunder men's basketball exhibition series. Cameron Brooks-Harris (198-F) rolled to the rim, took a lob feed from Taevion Kinsey (196-G/F) and slammed it in for a 27-9 lead. That was still in the first 10-minute quarter. IBA Elite, the home team in Sir Kendall Isaacs Gym, played Marshall on even terms for the rest of the game (82-82), once getting as close as seven points, but the Herd walked away with a 109-91 victory and a 2-0 record on the three-game trip. Elmore, a senior guard expected to make a serious run at Conference USA Player of the Year honors in the 2018-19 season, played for half the game and led Marshall with 18 points. Sophomore forward Darius George (6-foot-7), a key reserve player at the end of last season's run to the conference championship and the NCAA tournament second round, followed with 14 points and Kinsey, a freshman guard, was in double figures for the second time on the trip with 13. Head coach Dan D'Antoni used all 14 players, including senior guard C.J. Burks (190-G-95) who added 10 points. Burks didn't play Saturday for unexplained reasons in a 105-70 defeat of University of Bahamas. Kinsey and Burks logged the most court time with 25 and 23 minutes respectively. Senior guard Rondale Watson (193-G-96) grabbed nine rebounds and forward Cameron Brooks-Harris (6-7 freshman) snagged seven while also rejecting three shots. IBA Elite's tandem of guards, cousins from the Bahamas who played college ball in Canada, carried the load. Trevon Grant fired in 28 points (7-for-11 on 3-pointers) and Van Hutchinson netted 24 points. The home team made its most serious threat early in the second quarter, scoring six consecutive points and pulling within 37-30. Marshall answered with a 13-point surge started by Elmore's 3-pointer. Watson took a steal for a dunk, freshman guard Jeremy Dillon sank an outside shot, Kinsey dunked the rebound of a Brooks-Harris miss and 6-11 junior Ante Sustic scored inside before another Brooks-Harris basket. The run helped put the Herd up at halftime, 50-32. IBA Elite matched Marshall's second-half scoring, 59-59. Marshall's offense was bogged down at times by missed 3-pointers (12-for-47) and 21 turnovers, although the Herd made 21 steals and was plus-11 rebounding. The Herd picked up full-court defensively for the entire 40 minutes, using its length and quickness to create 28 turnovers. Next on the Marshall schedule is a 6 p.m. Wednesday game against Providence Storm playing its first game in the summer-long exhibitions.
