Barbados edges Antigua & Barbuda in CBC U16 for Women opener

Barbados recorded the first win of the 2016 edition of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) female under-16 championship with a 39-36 victory over Antigua and Barbuda when action commenced on Tuesday afternoon at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana. Antigua almost pulled off the win with four points in three seconds to trim the lead to 38-35 with 13.5s to play. However, Ivanna Odle hit one of two free throws to seal the with the score on 39-35 as the outcome at that point was a foregone conclusion. Zahra Ashby was the top scorer for Barbados with 12 points and while Roshanna Thorne had nine points of her own. Karel Knight and Timna Philip had 12 points apiece for the Antiguans in the loss. A back and forth battle between the two teams Barbados held onto their slim lead throughout the game with some tough 2-3 zone defence. After a halftime tie at 17 points, Barbados took the lead mid-way through the third and never relinquished the lead with Antiguans coming as close as three late in the fourth.
