Hoopsters one win from finals

THE SCHOOLGIRLS don't look so young anymore. Combined Schools Hoopsters are now just one game away from their first finals appearance in 16 years, having held on for Thursday's 53-49 Game 1 victory over UWI Blackbirds in the No.1 Beauty Supplies and Beauty Exchange Women's Basketball play-offs. It was a coming of age experience for the legitimate title contenders, whose veteran-like execution belied their youthful makeup in a series opener they never trailed in at the Barbados Community College. But it wasn't without worry, as Hoopsters had to survive several UWI rallies, including a pair of potential go-ahead free throws. Clinging to a late 50-47 lead, the schoolgirls gave up an uncontested layup after failing to account for Nikita President in the open floor.
