The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Gimnasia as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Gimnasia smashed 20th ranked Atenas in Comodoro Rivadavia 121-89. Gimnasia shot 62.0 percent from the field and made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 53.8 percentage. Gimnasia looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Atenas' players. It was a great evening for Cuban forward Joaquin Mensia (198-1997, agency: Pro Sports) who led his team to a victory scoring 46 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds (perfect behind the arc making all five shots). The former international Agustin Barreiro (205-1999) helped adding 16 points and 10 rebounds. At the losing side American guard Javion Blake (190-1997, college: Washburn, agency: Haylett Sports) responded with 19 points and 5 rebounds and naturalized Italian center Omar Canton (205-1982) scored 22 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Gimnasia have a solid series of four victories in a row. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Atenas lost fourteenth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with 15 games lost. Atenas will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest in order to get back on the winning path. Gimnasia will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Olimpico in La Banda.
