There was no surprise when 15th ranked Fortaleza (5-18) was crushed at home by leader Vivo/Franca (23-0) 102-65 on Tuesday. Vivo/Franca dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Fortaleza's 28. They outrebounded Fortaleza 38-27 including a 30-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Vivo/Franca looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. It was a great evening for the former international power forward Lucas Mariano (208-1993) who led his team to a victory scoring 28 points and 9 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). American guard Michael Smith (193-1995, college: CBU) helped adding 22 points and 5 rebounds. Four Vivo/Franca players scored in double figures. Argentinian Patricio Pinero (195-1995) responded with 15 points and 5 rebounds and point guard Matheusinho Brito (184-2000) scored 11 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the twenty third consecutive win for Vivo/Franca. They maintain first place with 23-0 record. Fortaleza lost their sixth game in a row. They keep the fifteenth position with 18 games lost. Vivo/Franca will meet at home Paschoalotto/Bauru (#7) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Fortaleza will play against Rio Claro (#17) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
