There was no surprise in Rio de Janeiro where 14th rankedU.Corinthians (7-15) was defeated by fourth ranked Vasco da Gama (16-7) 89-77 on Monday. Strangely U.Corinthians outrebounded Vasco da Gama 35-19 including 26 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The former international forward Marquinhos Vieira (207-1984) fired 32 points and 7 assists for the winners. Guard Matheus Eugeniusz (193-2000) chipped in 17 points and 5 assists. Four Vasco da Gama players scored in double figures. American forward Duane Johnson (201-1991, college: ESU) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists and Serbian guard Radovan Djokovic (196-1996) added 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Vasco da Gama have a solid three-game winning streak. Newly promoted Vasco da Gama maintains fourth position with 16-7 record. Loser U.Corinthians keeps the fourteenth place with 15 games lost. They share the position with Caxias do Sul.
