Regular Season Round 13: Minas - Flamengo 93-96

The most exciting game of round 13 in the Liga Americas took place in Belo Horizonte. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of their biggest opponent Minas (1-3) to leader Flamengo (3-0) 96-93 on Tuesday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Minas won third quarter 29-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Flamengo made 24-of-27 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game. 25 personal fouls committed by Minas helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Forward Marquinhos Vieira (207-84) stepped up and scored 20 points and 8 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners and American-Mexican guard Luke Martinez (190-90, college: Wyoming, agency: Pro Sports) chipped in 19 points. Five Flamengo players scored in double figures. Flamengo's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side American guard David Jackson (190-82, college: Penn St.) responded with 34 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds and the other American import guard Shaquille Johnson (194-90, college: Marshall, agency: Interperformances) scored 18 points and 4 assists. Flamengo have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place in Group D with 3-0 record. Minas at the other side dropped to the bottom position with three games lost. Flamengo will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Minas will play again on the road against the league's leader Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
