Regular Season Round 9: Santa Maria - Punto Rojo 51-71

Liga Desarrollo top team - Punto Rojo (7-1) had no problems winning another game on Thursday. This time they crushed sixth ranked Santa Maria (1-6) 71-51. Punto Rojo dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Maria's 24. Punto Rojo forced 22 Santa Maria turnovers and outrebounded them 50-29 including a 14-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. The former international power forward Eduard Caicedo (196-90) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners and power forward Jorge Cabezas (-99) chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds. The best for the losing side was center Nelson Ayovi (-0) with 12 points and 9 rebounds and guard Dylan Reyes (-2) scored 10 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Punto Rojo have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 7-1 record. Santa Maria lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with six games lost. Punto Rojo will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Santa Maria will play on the road against Importadora (#3) in Ambato and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
