Puerto Rico
Regular Season Round 8: Ponce - Guaynabo 100-109
Date: July 27, 2021
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Juana Diaz where one of their biggest challengers Leones (2-4) were defeated by fifth ranked Mets (2-4) 109-100 on Tuesday. Mets made 25-of-30 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. Mets outrebounded Leones 42-26 including a 33-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Mets especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American power forward Diamond Stone (211-97, college: Maryland) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 24 points and 15 rebounds and American-Dominican forward Angel Nunez (203-91, college: S.Florida) who added 30 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. American-Ivorian center Deon Thompson (204-88, college: UNC, agency: BeoBasket) responded with 23 points and Dominican Victor Liz (193-86) scored 16 points and 4 assists. Five Mets and four Leones players scored in double figures. Leones' coach let to play eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Newly promoted Mets maintains fifth position with 2-4 record, which they share with Ponce. Mets will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Leones will play against the league's second-placed Brujos (#2) in Guayama and hope to secure a win.
