Arecibo fired past Santurce in the opener. Capitanes outrebounded Cangrejeros 42-29 including 28 on the defensive glass. Naturalized U.S. Virgin Islands point guard Walter Hodge (183-86, college: Florida) stepped up and scored 26 points and 8 assists for the winners and Mexican center Gustavo Ayon (207-85, college: SJSU) chipped in 10 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists. Capitanes' coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side the former international point guard JJ Barea (183-84, college: Northeastern) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists and American Thomas Robinson (208-91, college: Kansas, agency: Network Sports International) scored 15 points and 9 rebounds. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures.
