NEBL Round 6: Belize City D. hands first defeat to San Pedro T. - Feb 26, 2018

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader, favorites losing the games and even winless team recording their first victory. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Undefeated San Pedro T. (6-1) recorded its first loss on the court of third ranked Belize City D. on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by Belize City D. 76-70. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. 28 personal fouls committed by San Pedro T. helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Darwin Leslie (191-81) who scored 28 points and 8 rebounds. American forward Nigel Jones (200-90, college: Talladega) chipped in 25 points and 7 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Martevuius Adams who recorded 31 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Belize City D. (3-1) moved-up to second place, which they share with Dream Ballers. San Pedro T. at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. Belize City D. is looking forward to face Dream Ballers (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. San Pedro T. will play against Belmopan B. and is hoping to win this game.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Smart Belize H. (3-2) against fourth ranked Dream Ballers (3-1) on Saturday night. Host Smart Belize H. was defeated by Dream Ballers in a tough game in Belize City 66-71. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Smart Belize H.. It was a key game for the second position in the league. It was a good game for American center Tahj Wells (208-89, college: Edward Waters) who led his team to a victory with 8 points and 11 rebounds. Macario Augustine contributed with 13 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. The former international forward Kurt Burgess (196-82) replied with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds for Smart Belize H.Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Dream Ballers moved-up to second place, which they share with Belize City D. Smart Belize H. at the other side dropped to the fourth position with two games lost. Dream Ballers will play against league's second-placed Belize City D. on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Smart Belize H. will play against Verdes and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

(#5) at home. Orange Walk RR will play against Verdes and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in Belmopan was also quite interesting. Third ranked Smart Belize H. (3-2) played at the court of 5th ranked Belmopan B. (2-4). Smart Belize H. managed to secure a 4-point victory 81-77 on Thursday. The best player for the winners was Akeem Watters who scored 21 points and 6 rebounds. Smart Belize H.'s coach used entire bench in such tough game. Despite that victory Smart Belize H. went down to fourth position due to points difference. Defending champion Belmopan B. keeps the fifth place with four games lost. Smart Belize H. will face Verdes (#6) in the next round. Belmopan B. will play against the league's leader San Pedro T. and hope to win that game.

Verdes - Belmopan B. 101-70

Verdes can celebrate finally their first win this season after four consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat Belmopan B. (2-4) 101-70 on Saturday. Verdes dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Belmopan B.'s 38 and made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Verdes forced 28 Belmopan B. turnovers and had a 38-26 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Isaiah Thomas scored 24 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals to lead the charge for the winners and guard Elbert Ariola chipped in 19 points during the contest. Verdes' coach felt very confident that he used 11 players and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was center Farron Louriano (198-89) with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds and the former international forward Stephen Williams (188-83) scored 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Verdes (1-4) left bottom position moving up to sixth place. Defending champion Belmopan B. keeps the fifth position with four games lost. Leader San Pedro T. delivered the sixth victory. This time they beat bottom-ranked Orange Walk RR (0-5) 92-86. San Pedro T. had a 39-25 advantage in offensive rebounds. Martevuius Adams notched a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the effort and center Andrew Ortiz supported him with 18 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Even a double-double of 18 points and 10 assists by forward Roger Reneau did not help to save the game for Orange Walk RR. Guard Dwayne Cummings added 18 points and 6 rebounds. Five San Pedro T. and four Orange Walk RR players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Smart Belize H. forced 27 Belmopan B. turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was forward Akeem Watters (186-95) who scored 21 points and 6 rebounds. American center Tyson Reynold (205-92, college: Life) chipped in a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds. Smart Belize H.'s coach used entire bench in such tough game. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Luther Page (198, college: Alabama St.) who recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds and forward Kyle Pascascio (191) added 18 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Here is the last round review presented by ESL. The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Belize City: Hurricanes (#4) and Running Rebels (#7).
