Belize Secures Opening game Against El Salvador in the Americup Tournament!!! - Jul 21, 2018

Last night at the Belize Civic Center, Team Belize managed to secure a last minute win against El Salvador in the grand opening of the Americup Tournament which featured three of the six Central American teams. Things got underway very slowly as neither team was able to tally a score until the seventh minute, when Roberto Sandoval for El Salvador opened the game. From that point on, he would continue to lead the Salvadorans, finishing with the highest score of 23 points. Soon after, Richard Troyer (196-F-84, college: Utah Valley) would equalize the game for Belize. After that, things did not go well for Team Belize, as they struggled on the offense and were plagued with turnovers. The jitters of playing at home and the eagerness to impress might have been the reasons why Belize did not perform so well in the first half. Although they did manage to pull off some incredible plays, there was little indication of team cohesion more of very good talent! A highlight of the first half was a spectacular pass from Darwin Carter (183-PG), throwing the ball on the glass and coming from behind, Charles Garcia (208-F-88, college: Seattle) dunked the ball to put the score 29 to 28 in favor of Belize! By the end of the first half, Belize took a lead of 31 - 29, a lead they would take to the end.
In the second quarter, turnovers and limited coordination and successful communication seemed to continue to afflict Belize; still, defensively, Belize looked good! From the El Salvador team, Sandoval continued to be a plague for Belize. Luckily for Belize, not much was seen from the rest of Sandoval's teammates. In the fourth quarter, Belize allowed El Salvador to rally back from a ten point deficit to take the lead 66-67 with 46 seconds on the clock. Nevertheless, Charles Garcia and Devin Daly (195-F-94, college: L.Superior) eventually brought back Belize to lead 71-68. With this win, Belize has secured a spot in the final on Sunday night against Costa Rica. If Belize wants to make it to the next round, they definitely need to play the basics, be calm and be focused! Team Belize has players with talent and skills; but this is not enough. They need to work better together. Sharp shooting Devin Daly led the way for Team Belize against El Salvador with 18 points and 8 rebounds and Charles Garcia was dominant in the paint with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Roberto Sandoval of El Salvador led all scorers with 23 points.

As majestic as the Civic Center was, the shoe appeared too big for the Belize City fans to fill. There were many empty seats all around. The last time Belize hosted an international competition was in 1998 when Belize lifted up the CARICOM Championships on the same turf.
