Libobasquet Round 10: Calero edges Amistad by two points - Aug 4, 2018

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with derby games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most exciting game of round 10 in the Libobasque took place in Potosi. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 3rd ranked Amistad (4-4) to first ranked Calero (7-1) 98-96 on Friday evening. American guard Louis Munks (190-90, college: Prairie View A&M) fired 33 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds for the winners. The former international point guard Axel Veizaga (182-96) chipped in 26 points. Nigerian-American guard George Williams (198-90, college: Wayland Baptist) produced 28 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Amistad's coach Bernie Tarr rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending champion maintains first position with 7-1 record. Amistad at the other side keeps the third place with four games lost. They share the position with La Salle CBBA and Carl A-Z.
Important game to mention about took place in La Paz. Fifth ranked Penarol (3-6) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging 6th ranked AND1 La Paz (1-8) 86-83 on Friday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of Serbian power forward Milos Petkovic (204-91) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points and 12 rebounds. Diondre Pratt contributed with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Cuban power forward Daniel Nembhard (204-91) replied with 27 points and 7 rebounds for AND1 La Paz. AND1 La Paz's coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Penarol moved-up to fourth place. AND1 La Paz lost eighth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with eight games lost. Penarol will play against league's second-placed Pichincha at home in the next round and it may be the game of the week. AND1 La Paz will play against the league's leader La Salle Tarija (#1) to get more than just one victory in their record.
A very close game took place in Cochabamba between La Salle CBBA and Vikingos. Fifth ranked La Salle CBBA (4-4) got a very close home victory over 6th ranked Vikingos (2-6). La Salle CBBA managed to escape with a 3-point win 68-65 on Friday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Vikingos. Miguel Barriola scored 20 points and 8 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. La Salle CBBA's coach Luis Campuzano used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side Rafael Rodrigues responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. La Salle CBBA moved-up to third place, which they share with Amistad and Carl A-Z. Loser Vikingos keep the sixth position with six games lost.
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Oruro: CAN Oruro (#2) and Carl A-Z (#4). CAN Oruro (6-2) smashed visiting Carl A-Z (4-4) by 20 points 103-83. Agustin Ambrosino notched 39 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds to lead the effort. CAN Oruro maintains second position with 6-2 record having just one point less than leader Calero. Carl A-Z at the other side dropped to the third place with four games lost.

In the last game of round 10 Univ. Santa Cruz was crushed by La Salle Tarija in a road game 91-66.
The best stats of 10th round was 29 points by Michael Flores of La Salle Tarija.



Rubair - Pichincha 82-101

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in . Third ranked Pichincha faced their biggest opponent Rubair. Guests from Pichincha (5-5) smashed host Rubair (5-5) 101-82. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Rubair. Pichincha forced 21 Rubair turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The former international guard Fernando Cadario (184-89) fired 36 points (!!!) and 6 assists for the winners. American forward Trevante Drye (199-93, college: Tulane) chipped in 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). Venezuelan guard Gregory Curvelo (190-90) produced a double-double by scoring 25 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists and Venezuelan guard Reimer Machado (185-89) added 21 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Rubair's coach Jorge Montes let to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Pichincha moved-up to second place, which they share with defeated Rubair. Pichincha will face Penarol (#4) in Quillacollo in the next round. Rubair will play against Univ. Santa Cruz and hope to win that game.

La Salle Tarija - Univ. Santa Cruz 91-66

There was no surprise when 4th ranked Univ. Santa Cruz (3-7) was crushed on the road by first ranked La Salle Tarija (9-1) 91-66 on Friday. La Salle Tarija dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Univ. Santa Cruz's 28. La Salle Tarija forced 24 Univ. Santa Cruz turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Venezuelan guard Michael Flores (192-85) fired 29 points for the winners. The former international point guard Martin Ochoa (185-94) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 assists. Four La Salle Tarija players scored in double figures. La Salle Tarija's coach Henry Paruta felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Spanish-American forward Duane James (196-83, college: Binghamton) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds and American swingman Ben Merritt (201-92, college: Urbana) added 15 points respectively for lost side. La Salle Tarija maintains first position with 9-1 record. Newly promoted Univ. Santa Cruz dropped to the fifth place with seven games lost. La Salle Tarija will face AND1 La Paz (#6) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Univ. Santa Cruz will play against Rubair and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

CAN Oruro - Carl A-Z 103-83

Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Oruro: CAN Oruro (#2) and Carl A-Z (#4). CAN Oruro (6-2) smashed visiting Carl A-Z (4-4) by 20 points 103-83. CAN Oruro dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Carl A-Z's 32 and made 22-of-28 charity shots (78.6 percent) during the game. CAN Oruro had a 41-27 advantage in offensive rebounds. Argentinian Agustin Ambrosino (203-90, college: BYU) notched 39 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds to lead the effort and American forward Howard Crawford (205-88, college: UAB) supported him with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Ambrosino is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Even 20 points and 4 assists by Rodrigo Fernandez did not help to save the game for Carl A-Z. American point guard Yavario Smith (182-89, college: Central Mo.) added 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for lost side. Five Carl A-Z players scored in double figures. CAN Oruro maintains second position with 6-2 record having just one point less than leader Calero. Carl A-Z at the other side dropped to the third place with four games lost.

JEFFREY FAHNBULLEH CAN Potosi (Libobasquet) signed experienced 34-year old American power forward Jeffrey Fahnbulleh (200-122kg-85). The last time (18) he played at Palanga BC in Lithuanian NKL league. Fahnbulleh missed last season and had one year break from professional basketball. The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Fahnbulleh won Peruvian LNB championship title in 2015.
