Flamengo lands Anderson Varejao - Jan 17, 2018

Anderson
Varejao
Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (NBB) tabbed experienced 36-year old Brazilian international center Anderson Varejao (211-118kg-82). He played recently at Golden State Warriors in the NBA, but was released by the team in Feb.'17. But in 14 games he averaged just 1.3ppg and 1.9rpg last season.
The previous (15-16) season Varejao played at the Warriors in NBA where in 39 games he had only 2.0ppg and 1.8rpg.
In 2004 Varejao was drafted by Orlando Magic (NBA) in second round (30th overall).
He received NBA All-Defensive 2nd Team award back in 2010.
Varejao also represented Brazil at the Olympic Games in London (United Kingdon) six years ago. His stats at that event were 6 games: 7.3ppg, 7.0rpg, 1.0spg, FGP: 56.3%, FT: 80.0%.
Varejao has played on three different continents (Europe, Latin America and of course North America). He has played previously professionally in Spain (FC Barcelona), NBA (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Brazil (Vivo/Franca).
It's very possible he may end his playing career at Flamengo.
Varejao could be described: This guy flies, and has a great sense for the rebound and very quick feet, but he never showed improvements in his offensive skills during his first three pro seasons: he can't really shoot, dribble or pass. It is very probable he will never be anything more than a role player, able to spend time at the 4 and 5 positions.
Outlook (by NBADraft.TK):
Positives: Aggresive rebounder who constantly crashes the boards. Great athlete for his size and good mobility and lateral quickness. Runs the floor well. Good rebounding and shot blocking skills. Good touch around the basket. Intense player who plays the game with tremendous heart.
Negatives: Still very raw although he is gaining experience in the professional league. Terrible free throw shooter. Does not have many low post moves. Would benefit greatly from added bulk
