LDB U20 Round 9: No surprise as #1 Pinheiros defeat Flamengo

Coincidentally all hosts won their games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

LDB U20 top team - Pinheiros (5-0) had no problems winning another game on Friday. This time they crushed seventh ranked Flamengo (1-3) in Sao Paulo 109-63. Pinheiros shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 55.2 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Flamengo's players. 24 personal fouls committed by Flamengo helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Danilo Sena (196-99) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and forward Paulo Scheuer (203-99) chipped in 25 points (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!). Pinheiros' coach felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was center Matheus Maciel (207-1) with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds. Undefeated Pinheiros have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 5-0 record, which they share with 5 other teams. Flamengo at the other side keeps the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Minas. Pinheiros is looking forward to face Cearense (#10) in Fortaleza in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Flamengo will play at home against Mogi and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked UniFacisa (0-4) is still winless. This time they lost on the road their fourth consecutive match to sixth ranked Mogi (3-2) 81-76. Center Felipe Cardoso (212-0) nailed a double-double by scoring 22 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks for the winning side and Luiz Mendonc accounted for 24 points (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Mogi's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Gabriel Barreto (-3) came up with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for UniFacisa in the defeat. Mogi moved-up to fifth place. UniFacisa lost their fourth game in a row. They still close the standings with four games lost. They share the position with Cearense. Mogi will play against Flamengo (#7) in Rio de Janeiro in the next round. UniFacisa will play at home against the league's second-placed Bauru and hopes to get finally their first victory.

The best player for the winners was Robson Junior who had a double-double by scoring 31 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. At the other side the best for losing team was Gabriel Santos who recorded a double-double by scoring 26 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Cerrado moved-up to second place, which they share with Bauru and Rio Claro. Loser Brasilia keeps the ninth position with four games lost. Cerrado will meet Praia (#6) in the next round. Brasilia will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 9 Praia lost to Rio Claro on the opponent's court 50-66. Bauru managed to outperform Minas in a home game 74-64.



Rio Claro - Praia 66-50

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 5th ranked Praia's (2-2) road loss to fourth ranked Rio Claro (4-1) 50-66 on Friday. Rio Claro held Praia to an opponent 23.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 30.4 percent accuracy of the winners. Rio Claro forced 21 Praia turnovers. The best player for the winners was Arthur Abreu (-2) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Guard Jose Vitor (181-1) chipped in 12 points and 7 assists. Rio Claro's coach used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Gabriel Cunha (188-0) who recorded 18 points and 9 rebounds and Lucas Lopes (206-1) added 5 points and 11 rebounds respectively. Rio Claro moved-up to second place, which they share with Bauru and Cerrado. Loser Praia dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. Rio Claro will meet Minas (#8) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Praia will play against Cerrado and hope to secure a win.

Another exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Brasilia: Cerrado (#3) and Brasilia (#9). Cerrado (4-1) crushed visiting Brasilia (1-4) by 20 points 98-78. Cerrado dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Brasilia's 32. Cerrado had a 39-27 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was point guard Robson Junior (178-0) who had a double-double by scoring 31 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. Center Sergio Conceicao (208-0) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points and 21 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Gabriel Santos (185-1) who recorded a double-double by scoring 26 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and Felipe Esteves (199-1) added 15 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Cerrado moved-up to second place, which they share with Bauru and Rio Claro. Loser Brasilia keeps the ninth position with four games lost. Cerrado will meet Praia (#6) in the next round. Brasilia will have a break next round.

Very predictable result when second ranked Bauru (4-1) defeated at home 8th ranked Minas (1-3) 74-64 on Friday. They outrebounded Minas 47-34 including 17 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was Danilo Penteado (200-99) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists. Samuel Ferreira (187-99) chipped in 23 points and 7 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Augusto Alcassa (201-0) who recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and 13 rebounds and forward Lucas Campolina (188-0) added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Bauru maintains second place with 4-1 record behind leader Pinheiros, which they share with Rio Claro and Cerrado. Loser Minas dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Flamengo. Bauru will meet UniFacisa (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Minas will play against Rio Claro (#4) and hope to win that game.
