Vasco da Gama signs Jamaal Smith, ex Marinos

R10 Score Vasco da Gama Rio de Janeiro (NBB) signed experienced 39-year old American point guard Jamaal Smith (184cm-85kg-1985, college: N.Mexico) for upcoming 2024-25 season. Smith played this summer at Marinos in Venezuelan SPB league. In 17 games just recently he had 5.1ppg, 1.1rpg and 2.2apg.
In 2012 (four years after his graduation) he was drafted by Oshawa Power (NBL Canada) in third round (20th overall).
He graduated from University of New Mexico in 2008 and it will be his 17th (!!!) season in pro basketball.
Smith is quite experienced player. He has played in eight different countries on four different continents (Europe, Asia, Latin America and of course North America). Smith has played previously professionally also in China (Beijing O.), Colombia (Tigrillos), Romania (CSM Bucuresti), Taiwan, Brazil (Vivo/Franca, Botafogo, Macae, Sao Jose and Rio Claro), Mexico (Correcaminos and Dorados), ABA (Las Vegas A.) and Venezuela (Brillantes). He was also voted to Latinbasket.com All-Brazilian League Honorable Mention in 2019, 2020 and 2024.
Smith's team made it to the Colombian LPB Semifinals in 2020.
Smith is close to retirement age as a player. It's very possible he may end his playing career at Vasco da Gama. He played also for Indian Hills Community College for one year.
