Paulista round 8 caused change at the leadership position. Second defeat of league's leader Corinthians (6-2) against fifth ranked Mogi (5-3) 93-76 was the most important game of the last round. Mogi dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Corinthians' 26. They outrebounded Corinthians 42-29 including 30 on the defensive glass. Mogi looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American forward Duane Johnson (204-1991, college: ESU) orchestrated the victory by scoring 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Paulo Da Costa (194-1994) contributed with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Power forward Victao Camilo (203-1997) replied with 14 points and 6 rebounds for Corinthians. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Mogi moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Bauru and Paulistano. Corinthians at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. They were joined at the leadership position by Sesi/Franca who have the same record. Corinthians will play next round against strong Sao Jose trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Mogi will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Bauru at home.
Leading Vivo/Franca (6-2) recorded its second loss in Sao Paulo. Hosts were rolled over by ninth ranked Pinheiros (3-5) 84-62. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Vivo/Franca. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Felipe Gregate (188-2003) who helped to win the game recording 22 points and 5 rebounds and Caua De Souza who added 13 points during the contest. American guard David Jackson (192-1982, college: Penn State) responded with 16 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Pinheiros moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Osasco and Rio Claro. Sesi/Franca at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. A very close game took place in Bauru between Paschoalotto/Bauru and Sao Jose. Sixth ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (5-3) got a very close home victory over second-ranked Sao Jose (6-2). Paschoalotto/Bauru managed to escape with a 1-point win 90-89 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Sao Jose. The winners were led by Andrezao Barbosa de Abreu who had that evening a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds. Even 26 points and 7 assists by Adyel Borges did not help to save the game for Sao Jose. Bauru moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Paulistano and Mogi. Loser Sao Jose still keeps top position with two games lost. They share it with Sesi/Franca and Corinthians. Bauru will meet Mogi (#5) in the next round. Sao Jose will play against Corinthians (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 8: Rio Claro was beaten by Osasco on the road 100-91. Osasco lost to Paulistano on its own court 72-76. Sorocabana unfortunately lost to Mandic Basket in Limeira 62-65.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists by Stan Scott of Mandic Basket.
