Paulista Round 8 of Regular Season

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in Paulista. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Paulista round 8 caused change at the leadership position. Second defeat of league's leader Corinthians (6-2) against fifth ranked Mogi (5-3) 93-76 was the most important game of the last round. Mogi dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Corinthians' 26. They outrebounded Corinthians 42-29 including 30 on the defensive glass. Mogi looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American forward Duane Johnson (204-1991, college: ESU) orchestrated the victory by scoring 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Paulo Da Costa (194-1994) contributed with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Power forward Victao Camilo (203-1997) replied with 14 points and 6 rebounds for Corinthians. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Mogi moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Bauru and Paulistano. Corinthians at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. They were joined at the leadership position by Sesi/Franca who have the same record. Corinthians will play next round against strong Sao Jose trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Mogi will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Bauru at home.
Leading Vivo/Franca (6-2) recorded its second loss in Sao Paulo. Hosts were rolled over by ninth ranked Pinheiros (3-5) 84-62. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Vivo/Franca. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Felipe Gregate (188-2003) who helped to win the game recording 22 points and 5 rebounds and Caua De Souza who added 13 points during the contest. American guard David Jackson (192-1982, college: Penn State) responded with 16 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Pinheiros moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Osasco and Rio Claro. Sesi/Franca at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. They share it with Corinthians and Sao Jose. Pinheiros will play against Osasco (#8) at home in the next round. Sesi/Franca's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Sao Paulo to the arena Paulistano.
A very close game took place in Bauru between Paschoalotto/Bauru and Sao Jose. Sixth ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (5-3) got a very close home victory over second-ranked Sao Jose (6-2). Paschoalotto/Bauru managed to escape with a 1-point win 90-89 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Sao Jose. The winners were led by Andrezao Barbosa de Abreu who had that evening a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds. Even 26 points and 7 assists by Adyel Borges did not help to save the game for Sao Jose. Bauru moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Paulistano and Mogi. Loser Sao Jose still keeps top position with two games lost. They share it with Sesi/Franca and Corinthians. Bauru will meet Mogi (#5) in the next round. Sao Jose will play against Corinthians (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 8: Rio Claro was beaten by Osasco on the road 100-91. Osasco lost to Paulistano on its own court 72-76. Sorocabana unfortunately lost to Mandic Basket in Limeira 62-65.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists by Stan Scott of Mandic Basket.



Osasco - Rio Claro 100-91

There was a small surprise when seventh ranked Osasco (3-5) beat at home their close opponent Rio Claro (3-5) 100-91 on Tuesday. Osasco made 24-of-28 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. The winners were led by American guard Anthony Harris (191-1997, college: Chicago St.) who scored that evening 33 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds and the former international center Hatila Passos (211-1985, college: NM State) supported him with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Even a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds by power forward Matheus Bonfim (206-1999) did not help to save the game for Rio Claro. Bosnian guard Marko Rikalo (187-1994) added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 12 assists for the guests. Five Osasco and four Rio Claro players scored in double figures. Rio Claro's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Osasco maintains seventh position with 3-5 record, which they share with Pinheiros and Rio Claro. Osasco will meet Pinheiros (#7) in the next round. Rio Claro will play against Mandic Basket and hope to secure a win.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 7th ranked Osasco's (3-5) home loss to sixth ranked Paulistano (5-3) 72-76 on Thursday. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Paulistano made 7 blocks. The winners were led by forward Silvio Neto (199-2004) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 10 points and 12 rebounds and guard Gabriel Landeira (198-2004) supported him with 9 points and 7 assists. Paulistano's coach Demetrius Ferraciu used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Even 20 points and 8 rebounds by American guard Anthony Harris (191-1997, college: Chicago St.) did not help to save the game for Osasco. Matheus Weber (194-2000) added 18 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts. Paulistano moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Bauru and Mogi. Loser Osasco keeps the seventh position with five games lost. They share it with Pinheiros and Rio Claro. Paulistano's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Sao Paulo Sesi/Franca.

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when eleventh ranked Mandic Basket (1-8) edged 10th ranked Sorocabana (2-7) in Limeira 65-62 on Thursday. The winners were led by American guard Stan Scott (193-1998, college: MSSU) who scored that evening 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists (on 10-of-11 shooting from the field) and forward Alex Rodrigues (206-1998, college: MSU-W.Plains) supported him with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Even 14 points and 6 rebounds by center Willker Zonzini (207-2005) did not help to save the game for Sorocabana. Victor Silva (197-2001) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Mandic Basket maintains eleventh position with 1-8 record. It was Sorocabana's third loss in a row. They keep the tenth place with seven games lost. Mandic Basket will meet higher ranked Rio Claro (#9) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Sorocabana will have a break next round.
