Paulista Round 9 of Regular Season

The most interesting game of round 9 was a home defeat of 3rd placed Sao Jose (6-3) to second ranked Corinthians (7-2) 85-76. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The former international point guard Elio Corazza (195-1989, college: Miami Dade CC) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 assists for the winners and American guard Davaunta Thomas (196-1995, college: UAFS) chipped in 19 points. The best for the losing side was Douglas Silva (202-1998) with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds. Corinthians keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Sesi/Franca. Sao Jose at the other side keeps the third place with three games lost. Corinthians is looking forward to face Bauru (#4) at home in the next round. Sao Jose will play against the league's leader Sesi/Franca in Sao Paulo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Paulistano was defeated at home 61-69 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. American guard David Jackson (192-1982, college: Penn State) nailed 18 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winning side and Juan Laterza accounted for 18 points and 4 assists. Guard Gabriel Landeira (198-2004) came up with 15 points and 6 rebounds for Paulistano in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sesi/Franca maintains first place with 7-2 record, which they share with Corinthians. Paulistano at the other side dropped to the sixth position with four games lost. Sesi/Franca will play against Sao Jose (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Paulistano's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Sao Paulo to the arena Pinheiros.
Ninth ranked Pinheiros (4-5) crushed at home 8th ranked Osasco (3-6) by 25 points 90-65, which is the biggest margin this round on Sunday night. The best player for the winners was Lucca Boracina who scored 20 points and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Anthony Harris who recorded 19 points and 8 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Pinheiros moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Rio Claro. Loser Osasco dropped to the ninth position with six games lost. Rather expected game when 11th ranked Mandic Basket (1-9) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked Rio Claro (4-5) 82-72 on Saturday. The best player for the winners was Bosnian guard Marko Rikalo (187-1994) who scored 22 points. Forward Jonathan Dos Anjos (203-1998, college: UTEP) chipped in 20 points and 5 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was center Pedro Leopoldino (206-1998) who recorded 18 points and Daniel Alemao added 10 points and 12 rebounds respectively. Four Mandic Basket players scored in double figures. Rio Claro moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Pinheiros. Loser Mandic Basket stay at the bottom position with nine games lost. Rio Claro will meet Sorocabana (#10) on the road in the next round. Mandic Basket will have a break next round.
