Kleon Penn
The British Virgin Islands basketball player who plays as a BSN native with Guayama, Kleon Penn (213-C-86, college: McNeese St., agency: Paris Global Sports), can count on nostalgia for the disaster that Hurricane Irma left on his island of Tortola in the past days.
Fortunately, among their families there were no fatalities due to the passage of category 5 hurricane, said Penn, who lives in Puerto Rico.
But Irma's disaster trail in Tortola, which, like many Caribbean islands, is full of green mountains and paradisiacal beaches, is painful.
"It's an island totally different from the one I know. There are places I've been and now I can not recognize, "Penn told Prime Time yesterday when talking about the images he has seen through television and social networks.
Irma passed through Tortola on Wednesday. This island is located 96 miles east of Fajardo.
Penn says he spoke to his family on Tuesday, hours before the imminent hurricane. He added that such were the damages to Tortola, who could not speak to his parents until Friday.
"I was under a lot of stress. It was not until Friday that I was able to talk to them because my aunt went to the house and handed her the phone, "he said of his parents who are between 60 and 70 years old.
"With my sister, who lives in the mountains, I have not been able to speak," he added sadly.
He detailed that he has seen photos of what was his residence, as well as the properties of other relatives and friends. He added that the structures suffered major damage.
"My roof flew. The roof of my family flew. There were no deaths, but they lost everything. It has been difficult, "he said.
"I've seen houses I've been to. There what remains are empty solar, "he continued.
Tortola is the largest and most populated island of that British archipelago and was declared in a state of emergency by England.
There, four deaths related to the passage of this atmospheric event have been reported.
"There was a death of a person holding a window and the winds took it away," Penn said.
He compared Irma's damage to other hurricanes, such as Hugo, and claimed he had never seen so much damage.
"I've never seen so much damage as this time. It's a totally different island now. I know of people who had to hide in bathrooms, in fridges. "
Penn, who was born in Fajardo and represents the British Virgin Islands in FIBA competitions, showed pride in the solidarity he has seen from the Puerto Rican people to Tortola, while inviting citizens to continue donating.
"I've seen a lot of people coming to the collection centers to donate. It has been very inspiring, "he said. "To all people who can, donate what they can," he concluded.
