ESHS Bball team heads to St. Thomas for MLK Games - Jan 20, 2019

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Since the devastating Hurricanes of 2017 not much has been happening at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) in the area of sports. With many of the sporting facilities destroyed, a National Democratic Party (NDP 1) government that is broke and the alternative government, the Recovery & Development Agency going through the tender process, the recovery and rehabilitation of sporting facilities including basketball courts are taking longer than anticipated.
However, there is good news, today Friday, January 18, 2019, the ESHS Senior Rams Basketball team, as well as the Bregado Flax Educational Centre's - 'BFEC Arabians' senior basketball team are headed to St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands (USVI) to participate in the annual high school, Martin Luther King Jr., international Basketball Tournament.

The ESHS team's Head coach is Physical Education teacher Steve E. Parillon an 'All American' Basketball athlete.

The Assistant Coach is local Basketball Superstar Jason A. Edwin and Rhennie O. Phipps both Physical Education teachers at the ESHS. The Senior Rams manager and trainer is Derwin Scatliffe, a former Athletic Director of the ESHS.

Speaking exclusively to our news centre, Mr Paillion noted, 'This is our first basketball competition since Hurricanes Irma and Maria, so it's a big deal for us as we have not been competing in any sports since the hurricanes.'

The Head Coach also said that there will be high school teams from St. Croix and St. Thomas and a team from Bregado Flax on Virgin Gorda is also expected to be in St. Thomas at the MLK High School basketball games.

Head Coach Optimistic

Mr Paillion said, 'My team has been working and myself and the coaches are up for the challenges…we have two of the best guards going with us…We have a new team, I think we have a good chance of coming home with the trophy.'

The Senior Rams head coach noted that this Martin Luther King tournament is, 'one of the biggest for High School basketball' in the USVI and that he was 'very excited to be going away to represent the Territory and the Elmore Stoutt High School.'

The Principal of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Hilroy A. George confirmed that the school's 12 Member basketball team, the BFEC Arabians will be representing the school along with two coaches at this weekend's MLK Games.
