Coastal Bend survived a long scoring drought in the second half, but the Cougars could do nothing about Panola's Lanell Henry after the break and it cost them a chance at the tournament's first big upset.

Henry scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including a rim-rattling dunk to tie the game late, and East No. 3 seed Panola rallied for a 70-66 win over South No. 6 seed Coastal Bend on Tuesday at the Region XIV Conference Basketball Tournament at Centenary College's Gold Dome.

Panola (23-8) advances to meet Angelina at 3 p.m. on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Coastal Bend ends its season with an 8-17 record.

Panola led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Coastal Bend cut the deficit to 31-25 when Royce Hunter drained a 3-pointer for the Cougars just before the break.

A triple by Coastal Bend's Charlie Callier with 17:15 to play moved the Cougars in front, and Coastal Bend used a modest 9-2 run to build a 46-40 lead before the lid slammed shut on the Cougars' end of the court and Henry heated up for the Ponies.

Henry hit a short jumper at the 13:23 mark to start his personal 7-0 run. Despite the outburst by Henry, the Cougars still managed to stay in front until a scoring drought that lasted more than four minutes let the Ponies stick around.

Henry's dunk on a strong baseline move to the hoop tied it at 62 apiece with 1:35 left. Coastal Bend used free throws by Hunter and Brian Payton to take a 66-64 lead, but the Ponies went in front to stay on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Carlos Nuttry with 22 seconds remaining.

Josh Williams, shooting for an injured Franklyn Penn Jr. (190-G-97) after Penn had come down with a clutch rebound, iced the game with two free throws with five seconds remaining.

Penn finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Ponies.

Relando Rogers and the Northeastern Junior college will square off with Sheridan College Generals (28-2 overall record, and 13-1 in Region IX North play). Sheridan will be the host site for the Region IX Tournament on March 7-9, and the game will be at 10pm on Thursday evening.

D'Moi Hodge and SCF qualify for the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA)/National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 8 tournament in Ocala, Florida. The Men's tournament begins on March 7 and concludes on March 9. The Manatees will play the first round at 8:00 p.m. on March 7th versus the Mid-Florida Champion Eastern Florida State College Titans (24-6).
