- by
Daniel Valencia
Universidad Catolica won Dimayor 2005 after defeating Universidad
de Concepcion 106-100 (50-51) in Game 5 of the series. With this
title, Catolica is the first team in the history of the league that
reach their fifth crown (83,84,85,86,05).
Based on the good offensive night of the foreigners and
Mike Elliot, Catolica was able to control the intentions of the
visitors, that played with Kevin Melson in replace of Willie
Jr.Simms.
Catolica entered the game very focus on both sides of the court with an
effective Mike Elliot, shooting from downtown and with the
support of Mike Manciel, that attacked the basket every time that
the ball was in his hands.
After a bad defensive first quarter (35 points), Concepcion reacted and
allowed only 15 points from Catolica. In that moment the offensive work
of Avello and Fields was the key for Concepcion, that won
the quarter and ended the first half one point ahead (50-51).
The third quarter was a very tied one, where the biggets lead was of
just 4 points (Concepcion). For moments, Courtney Fields was
unstopable for Catolica near the basket. He grabbed offensive boards and
gave his team second chances in the offensive. For Catolica,
Demetric Shaw take controll of the action with penetrations and
good offensive decisions.
With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Concepcion was only one
posesion behind Catolica, but the referees called the fifth foul of
Courtney Fields. After that, Catolica put the ball in the hands of
Manciel and Shaw that finished the game going the basket and being
effective from the free throw line where they decided the game.
