The dominican basketball has been present in the colombian basketball for years, from the times of Jose 'Maita' Mercedes as a flashy point guard to the recent scoring power of Jonathan Rodriguez, but also good dominican coaches had been part of the colombian professional basketball story, Miguel Cruceta with Osos Bogota, 'Maita' with Expreso Azul, Adriano Dilone who coached in Manizales too and also was coach of Canoneros, Patriotas, Piratas and Bukaros
Now the time is for Ruddy Martinez , we caught him just finishing the first practice of the day in Manizales:

LB/ Did you have any information of the Colombian basketball before?

RM/For sure, I got good references from Dominican players of the club Mauricio Baez (his current club in the DR) that had played in Colombia, especially from Jonathan Rodriguez that has been playing in the country the last seasons, also from Cesar Chavez, Bobby Pandy, and others that tells me very good about the Colombian people and the beautiful city of Manizales.

Matinez has been coaching teams in his native Dominican Republic but also in the popular NY City summer leagues like the Dyckman, making the Dominican Power team champion several times,

LB/ What kind of game do you like to implement in your teams?

RM/ My philosophy is to build a team game, very focused on the defensive effort and the hard work, we want to build our success based on the effort.

Manizales has actually its roster almost complete, chooses to bring back a couple of well known guards: Shamar Coombs (185-G-86, college: Texas A&M-CC)s and Ashton Smith (187-G-89, college: Indiana, PA) and added an bahamian big in Kregg Jones (203-F-91, college: CSU Bakersfield), this three imports joins a base of Colombians leaded by the veteran center / forward John Velez , the forward Adison Blandon, the forward Dario Castro and the Colombian - American guard Ricardo Rivera are the most experienced player , the roster is completed by a group on Manizales based players.

LB/ What are your expectations for this first experience in Colombia

RM/ I have great expectations, I want to be successful with the team, that's what we are working for, but we know is not going to be easy so we have to go game by game, growing each day to try and put ourselves in a position to compete, I cannot promise that we are going to be champions but for sure we are going to be contenders.

Sabios has a good base of fans, the team really needs their support to keep going long term in the Colombian professional basketball and Ruddy could be part the long term success of the team.

Juan Palacios selected the top Colombian playing abroad in last week's games - 2 months ago
We bring you last week's top performances from Colombians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level. This week's number one is an experienced international power forward Juan Palacios (206-85). He could not help Chalon/Saor (6-5) in their last game. Despite Palacios' very good performance Chalon/Saor lost 87-91 on the road to the higher-ranked (#5) Chalons-Reims.    [read more]
