We bring you last week's top performances from Colombians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.
#1. This week's number one is an international shooting guard
Braian Angola-Rodas (198-94, agency:
Wasserman, college:
FSU, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He contributed to
Oostende's victory against the ninth-ranked Twarde Pierniki (2-12)
75-70 in the Basketball Champions League in Wednesday night's game.
Angola-Rodas scored 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 19 minutes on the court.
Filou Oostende (8-6) is placed fourth in group A.
The Regular Season already ended in the Basketball Champions League.
It's Angola-Rodas' first season with the team.
He has relatively good stats this year: 14.0ppg, 5.2rpg, 2.8apg, 1.9spg, 2FGP: 36.0%, 3FGP: 30.9% and FT: 85.5% in 14 games he played so far.
Angola-Rodas is currently a member of the Colombian senior national team.
#2. Second place goes to an experienced former international power forward
Juan Palacios (206-85, currently plays in Spain). He could not help
Movil Estudiantes to beat Valencia Basket (11-10).
Palacios scored 5 points.
His team was defeated
77-73 on the road by the much lower-ranked Valencia Basket (#7).
This season Palacios averages: 8.2ppg, 3.7rpg, 2FGP: 43.5%, 3FGP: 16.7% and FT: 51.5%.
He has a dual citizenship: Colombian and Spanish.
Former Guerreros de Bogota starter played for the Colombian national team in 2017.
#3. The Colombian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international point guard
Hansel Atencia (178-97, agency:
Players Group, college:
Master's, currently plays in Iceland). Atencia was not able to help
Thor AK in their game against Njardvik (11-7) in the Icelandic Dominos League.
He scored 8 points, made 6 passes and 5 steals in 33 minutes.
Thor AK was edged
97-94 at home by the much higher-ranked (#4) Njardvik.
It was Thor AK's third consecutive loss in a row.
There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical.
Atencia has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.2ppg, 2.7rpg, 5.7apg, 2.1spg, 2FGP: 47.5%, 3FGP: 29.6% and FT: 87.0% in 18 games.
Atencia is another player who holds two passports: Spanish and Colombian.
He played for the Colombian national team two years ago.
#4. Power forward
Jhan Paul Mejia (208-94, college:
Charleston, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for
Villarrobledo (7-14) in their game against Benicarlo (5-16) in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division). Mejia did not beat the league record on Saturday evening.
He scored only 2 points.
The tenth-placed Villarrobledo (7-14) was defeated
77-67 on their home court in Villarrobledo by the lower-ranked Benicarlo (#12) in the West group.
Mejia's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial.
Mejia's overall stats this season are: 5.9ppg and 3.1rpg.
Similarly like Atencia and Palacios above he has both Colombian and Spanish nationalities.
Mejia used to play for the Colombian national team
back in 2018.
#5. Former international forward
Yesid Mosquera-Perea (200-97, currently plays in NCAA2) couldn't help the
The University of Virginia's College at Wise in their last game. Despite his good performance the The University of Virginia's College at Wise lost
68-78 in Greeneville to the Tusculum College.
Mosquera-Perea recorded 10 points in 15 minutes.
Mosquera-Perea is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in The University of Virginia's College at's roster.
This season his overall stats are: 7.1ppg and 4.2rpg in 18 games.
Mosquera-Perea used to play for the Colombian national team
four years ago.
The list of other players, who all have Colombian passport but never been selected to any of Colombian national teams: #1. Jaime Echenique (211-C, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the
Wichita St. (4-2) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance the Wichita St. was edged
80-79 on the road by the University of Cincinnati.
Echenique recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 3 blocks.
This season Echenique has relatively solid stats: 11.3ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.3bpg.
#2. Juan Cardenas (201-F-97, currently studies in the States) led
Bryant to a victory against the St. Francis College (NY) (3-4)
73-60 in the NCAA on Thursday night.
He recorded 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 26 minutes.
The Bryant University has 2-3 conference record this season.
This year Cardenas averages: 5.9ppg and 2.6rpg in 21 games he played so far.
#3. Ivan Losada (185-SG-96, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help
PBB in their game against Betanzos (6-10) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones.
Losada recorded only 3 points.
PBB (#4) was defeated
104-96 on the opponent's court by the lower-ranked Betanzos (#9) in the Group A-B.
It was PBB's first loss after four consecutive victories.
Losada's total stats this season are: 4.3ppg and 1.6rpg.
