LPB Round 1: Storm defeat Hurricanes- May 1, 2021
The Regular Season in LPB just started. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with loss of the undefeated team and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.
Hurricanes - Storm 67-88 The most surprising game was a loss of Hurricanes in San Andres on Tuesday night. Hosts were rolled over by Storm 88-67. They made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. Storm looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Hurricanes' players. Worth to mention a great performance of Dominican Jaison Colome (190-96) who helped to win the game recording 24 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. Dominican forward Jose Familia (201-98) contributed with 9 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Four Storm players scored in double figures. American guard John Merchant (187-89, college: Dowling) answered with 15 points and 9 rebounds and guard Kevin Masquita (-95) added 12 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for Hurricanes. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Storm is looking forward to face Piratas in Bogota in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Hurricanes will play on the road against Sabios in Manizales and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Hurricanes managed to get a 4-point victory 80-76. Hurricanes forced 19 Bucaros turnovers. American guard John Merchant (187-89, college: Dowling) fired a double-double by scoring 21 points, 18 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners. His fellow American import Jaelyn Johnson-Coston (198-93, college: FMU) chipped in 25 points and 6 rebounds. Hurricanes' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Nigerian-Jamaican swingman Weyinmi Rose (196-86, college: Providence) produced 21 points and 6 rebounds and American Parker Farris (195-94, college: Hawaii-Hilo) added 19 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Hurricanes' next round opponent will be Sabios in Manizales and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Bucaros will play at home against Cafeteros and hope to win that game. Storm was outleveled in a road game by Titanes 103-82 on Thursday. Titanes dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Storm's 36. They outrebounded Storm 51-31 including a 40-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. Titanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a very good performance for the former international power forward Juan Palacios-Tello (206-85) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 15 points, 18 rebounds and 4 assists. Panamanian Ernesto Oglivie (199-89) contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Dominican Jaison Colome (190-96) answered with 24 points and 4 steals and Dominican point guard Yerri Flores (188-96, college: High School) added 19 points in the effort for Storm. Four Titanes and five Storm players scored in double figures. Titanes will face Hurricanes in San Andres in the next round. Storm will play at home against Piratas and hope to win that game. Cafeteros eked out just a narrow 2-points road win over Piratas 85-83. Piratas were very close to get their first win. But it seems they have to wait a little bit longer. International Michaell Jackson (190-87) stepped up and scored 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and American-Jamaican power forward Phil Philip (203-91, college: ENMU) chipped in 21 points and 5 rebounds. Cafeteros' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. At the losing side American guard Gabriel Belardo (188-89, college: FIU) responded with 28 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and center Javier Fernandez scored 24 points and 6 assists. Cafeteros will play against Bucaros in Bucaramanga in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Piratas will play at home against Team Cali and it may be a tough game between close rivals. They dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Team Cali's 44. Sabios had a 33-20 advantage in offensive rebounds. American JC Fuller (194-94, college: W.Illinois, agency: Slash Sports) nailed 30 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side and Haitian-American forward Jeff Coby (203-94, college: Columbia) accounted for 21 points and 14 rebounds. Sabios' coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American Anthony January (206-93, college: CSUSB) came up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 15 rebounds and guard Stedmon Dondre added 21 points respectively for Team Cali in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Sabios will meet at home Hurricanes in the next round. Team Cali will play against Piratas in Bogota and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
