LPB Round 5: Motilones defeat Hurricanes in the closest game of the week- May 15, 2021
There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in LPB. The round was exceptionally exciting as three games ended with a tiny margin. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.
Cafeteros - Hurricanes 83-104 Very important is a home loss of second ranked Cafeteros (5-2) against eighth ranked Hurricanes (2-5) on Wednesday night. Host Cafeteros were crushed by Hurricanes in Armenia 104-83. Hurricanes made 16-of-19 charity shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Puerto Rican guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-91, agency: Interperformances) nailed a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 12 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the winning side and American power forward Anthony Young (200-89, college: KWC) accounted for 27 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Hurricanes players scored in double figures. American-Jamaican power forward Phil Henry (203-91, college: ENMU) came up with 22 points and 6 rebounds and international Michaell Jackson (190-87) added 12 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Cafeteros in the defeat. Newly promoted Hurricanes maintains eighth place with 2-5 record, which they share with Storm. Cafeteros at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the third position with two games lost. Hurricanes will play against higher ranked Tigrillos (#5) in Medellin in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Cafeteros will play at home against the league's leader Titanes and will have a slim chance for a victory. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their seventh consecutive match to third ranked Motilones (5-1) 64-61. Motilones outrebounded Team Cali 44-32 including a 37-25 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international forward Soren De Luque (196-98) orchestrated the victory by scoring 17 points and 5 rebounds. American center Nicholas Evans (210-88, college: S.Indiana) contributed with 7 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. This time they beat fifth ranked Tigrillos (3-3) in Barranquilla 87-70. Titanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was Panamanian Ernesto Oglivie (199-89) who scored 23 points and 9 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). Dominican-Puerto Rican forward Jonathan Rodriguez (196-87, college: Campbell) chipped in a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds. American-Argentinian power forward Phillip Lockett (202-88) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and Dominican guard Gelvis Solano (185-94, college: Merrimack) added 13 points respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Titanes. Defending champion maintains first place with 6-0 record. Loser Tigrillos dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Titanes will meet Cafeteros (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Tigrillos will play against Hurricanes and hope to secure a win. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 8th ranked Hurricanes (2-5) to third ranked Motilones (5-1) 92-89 on Friday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Motilones outrebounded Hurricanes 45-28 including 31 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American center Jovonni Shuler (198-87, college: SSU) stepped up and scored 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and forward Adarius Mashuan chipped in 17 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Shuler is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American power forward Anthony Young (200-89, college: KWC) responded with 24 points and 6 rebounds and Puerto Rican guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-91, agency: Interperformances) scored 22 points and 5 assists. Five Motilones and four Hurricanes players scored in double figures. Motilones have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. Bucaros' coach used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. American guard Gabriel Belardo (188-89, college: FIU) responded with 28 points and American-Puerto Rican forward Timajh Parker-Rivera (202-94, college: Towson) scored 24 points and 7 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Five Bucaros and four Piratas players scored in double figures. Bucaros moved-up to fourth place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Piratas.
