Movistar Estudiantes Madrid (Primera FEB) signed 28-year-old Colombian-Spanish international 178cm point guard Hansel Atencia (college: Master's) for the upcoming season. It marks his return to Madrid, where he has previously played. Atencia's most recent stint was with Paisas in the Colombian LBP league, where he averaged 12.0ppg, 2.2rpg, and 4.3apg in 9 games last season, helping them secure the league title. He also had a stint with Trotamundos de Carabobo (SPB) in the Venezuelan league.
He has also been a member of the Colombian international program for some years. Atencia has regularly played for the Colombian senior team since 2016 and previously for the Under 17 National Team in 2013.
He also represented Colombia at the FIBA World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers two years ago. Atencia's team won Silver and he averaged over 12 ppg.
Atencia is a very experienced player. He has traveled quite a bit during his pro career, playing in four different countries on three different continents (Europe, Latin America, and North America). Atencia has played professionally in Colombia (Bucaros and Titanes), Iceland (Haukar and Thor Akureyri), Venezuela, and Spain (Caceres, Valladolid, Real Betis, Oviedo, and Cantabria).
Among many awards, he was voted to Latinbasket.com All-Colombian LPB Clausura Honorable Mention back in 2021.
He graduated from Master's University in 2019 and it will be his seventh season in pro basketball. Atencia played for other colleges like Liberty University and High School.
