Here is the weekly review of the top performing Cuban players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Jasiel Rivero (204-93, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). He could not help Estudiantes Concordia (12-18) in their last game. Despite Rivero's very good performance Estudiantes Concordia lost 79-85 on the road to the lower-ranked (#18) Penarol. He was the top scorer with 30 points. Rivero also added 5 rebounds in 34 minutes on the court. It was Estudiantes Concordia's third consecutive loss in a row. Rivero has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.1ppg, 5.6rpg, 2FGP: 61.0%(147-241), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 73.5% in 27 games he played so far. Rivero is currently a member of the Cuban senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Javier Justiz (205-92, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). He led San Lorenzo to a victory over the 13th-ranked Argentino (15-18) 92-76 in the Argentinian LigaA last Wednesday. Justiz was MVP of the game. He recorded 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. San Lorenzo de Almagra (24-6) is placed first in the LigaA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Justiz's first season with the team. Justiz has relatively good stats this year: 11.5ppg, 6.1rpg, 1.4bpg, 2FGP: 61.3%(133-217) and FT: 61.5%. He is in the roster of the Cuban senior national team.

   #3. The Cuban player who performed third best last week abroad was former international guard Reynaldo Garcia (187-90, agency: DTMones, currently plays in Argentina). Garcia was the main contributor in a San Martin Corrientes' victory against the ninth-ranked Regatas Corrientes (15-15) 79-72 in a derby game in the Argentinian LigaA on Friday night. He was the best player in that game. Garcia recorded 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 28 minutes. San Martin Corrientes (23-6) is placed third in the LigaA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Garcia has relatively solid stats: 12.9ppg, 4.7rpg, 3.7apg, 1.7spg, 2FGP: 49.4%, 3FGP: 44.1% and FT: 73.6% in 29 games. He played for the Cuban national team nine years ago.

   #4. Forward Yoanki Mensia (196-97, currently plays in Argentina) was the major contributor in a GECR Indalo's victory against the closely-ranked La Union (16-14) 88-76 in the Argentinian LigaA in Monday night's game. Mensia scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Gimnasia-Indalo Esgr.Comodoro Rivadavia (17-16) is placed sixth in the LigaA. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Mensia's overall stats this season are: 4.8ppg and 1.7rpg. He is also Cuban national team player.

   #5. International forward Karel Guzman (188-95, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to help Ciclista (17-22) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the ninth-placed Ciclista (17-22) was crushed 86-64 in Rivadavia by the higher-ranked (#8) Centro Deportivo de Mendoza in the South group. Guzman was the top scorer with 16 points in 35 minutes. Guzman has very impressive stats this year: 16.6ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.7apg and 1.8spg in 39 games. He plays currently for the Cuban national team.

An experienced swingman Yorman Polas Bartolo (192-85, currently plays in Germany) managed to help Telekom Baskets Bonn to win against the 11th-ranked Giessen 46ers (14-15) 86-80 in the German BBL last Saturday. Bartolo scored only 2 points. Telekom Baskets Bonn (18-10) is placed fifth in the BBL. Bartolo's overall stats this season are: 8.1ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.9apg and 1.1spg. He is a former international player as he played for the Cuban senior team seven years ago.

Former international power forward Grismay Paumier (204-88, currently plays in France) contributed to a Saint Chamond's victory against the closely-ranked Chorale de Roanne (21-7) 78-71 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. He recorded 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 23 minutes. Saint Chamond Basket Valle du Gier (18-10) is placed sixth in the ProB. Paumier has reliable stats this year: 11.5ppg, 6.6rpg and 1.2apg in 28 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team nine years ago.

   #8. Forward Georvys Elias (199-81, currently plays in Spain) helped Albacete win their game against the 11th-ranked Myrtia (12-17) 72-56 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) last Saturday. Elias scored 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Arcos Albacete Basket (18-11) is placed fifth in the LEB Silver. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Elias' overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 5.6rpg, 2.5apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Cuban national team back in 2009.

International power forward Lisvan Valdez (200-88, currently plays in El Salvador) helped Halcones edge the seventh-ranked Brujos Izalco (10-8) 73-71 in the Salvadorean Liga MB (second division) in Saturday night's game. He was the top player that evening. Valdez scored 25 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and made 2 blocks. Halcones de Sonzacate (15-3) is placed first in the Liga MB. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. This season Valdez has very high stats. He averages: 23.2ppg, 7.6rpg, 2.8apg, 1.2bpg and 1.1spg. Valdez is also in the roster of the Cuban national team.


The list of other players, who all have Cuban passport but never been selected to any of Cuban national teams:

   #1. Howard Sant-Roos (200-F-91, currently plays in EuroCup) contributed to Darussafaka's victory against the leader Lokomotiv (6-0) 67-59 in the Eurocup last Friday. Sant-Roos scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 33 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group E. Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul (5-1) is placed first. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. This year Sant-Roos' overall stats are: 8.6ppg, 4.2rpg, 4.0apg and 2.0spg in 21 games he played so far.

   #2. Adrian Diaz (213-C-93, college: FIU, currently plays in Romania) was the major contributor in a BC Timisoara's victory against the sixth-ranked Pitesti (14-15) 84-79 in the Romanian Liga Nationala on Wednesday night. He scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. BC Timisoara (17-12) is placed fifth in Places 1-6 group. There are only four games left until the end of the Second Stage. So now every game will be critical. Diaz has reliable stats this season: 13.2ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.4apg. He has a dual citizenship: Cuban and American. Strangely Diaz has never played in Cuba.

   #3. Juan Ferrales (187-G-91, college: Barry, currently plays in Norway) contributed to an easy victory against the league leader Asker Aliens (24-3) 83-68 in the Norwegian BLNO on Wednesday night. Ferrales scored 10 points and added 4 assists in 37 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Kongsberg Miners (23-4) is placed second in the BLNO. It was his team's tenth consecutive victory in a row. Ferrales has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 21.0ppg, 4.6rpg, 5.0apg and 1.2spg in 34 games. Ferrales is another player who holds two passports: Cuban and American. Strangely he has never played in Cuba.

   #4. Yunio Barrueta (198-F/G-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Barry, currently plays in France). Barrueta could not help Denain Voltaire (14-14) to beat Caen (10-18). He recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Denain Voltaire was crushed 102-69 on the road by the lower-ranked Caen (#13). Barrueta has reliable stats this season: 12.9ppg and 3.1rpg. He has both American and Cuban nationalities. Strangely Barrueta has never played in Cuba.

   #5. Yankiel Moreno (189-G-90, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Italy) managed to help Kleb Basket Ferrara to win against the ninth-ranked Aurora Jesi (16-13) 75-58 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) on Sunday night. Moreno scored only 4 points and added 5 assists. Kleb Basket Ferrara (16-13) is placed seventh in East group. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Moreno's overall stats this season are: 7.9ppg, 3.1rpg, 4.4apg and 1.4spg. He also holds two passports: Cuban and Italian.

   #6. Sigfredo Casero-Ortiz (185-PG-97, currently plays in France) was not able to help GET Vosges (10-21) in their last game. Despite Casero-Ortiz's very good performance GET Vosges lost 95-99 at home to the leading Gries/Oberhoffen. He was the top scorer with 21 points. Casero-Ortiz also added 5 assists in 29 minutes. Casero-Ortiz's stats this year are: 11.0ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.2apg in six games. He has dual citizenship: Cuban and Belgian. Despite Casero-Ortiz's Cuban passport, he currently plays for the Belgian U20 national team and is not eligible to play for the Cuban team.

   #7. Sigal Benitez (193-G-94, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Quart in their game against Menorca in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). Benitez scored 6 points in 20 minutes. His team lost 67-78. This year Benitez's overall stats are: 7.0ppg and 3.0rpg in 23 games.

   #8. Ismael Romero (203-C-91, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Israel) couldn't help Hap.Haifa (9-17) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Hap.Haifa lost 88-96 in Givataim to the higher-ranked (#7) Hapoel Ramat Gan. Romero was the top scorer with 20 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 24 minutes. Romero has very impressive stats this year: 21.6ppg, 12.2rpg, 2.0apg and 1.6spg in 26 games.

  



Villa Clara, Camaguey claim latest victories - 3 days ago
Villa Clara edged Matanzas 81-61 in the latest game at the Liga Superior de Baloncesto Masculino 2019. They improved to a 3-1 record, while Matanzas fell at 5-2. Villa Clara dominated the whole game and won all the quarters of it. Camaguey edged Capitalinos de la Habana 76-68. Keiler Cala (195-F-94) stepped up with 21 points and Yordanis Jaca (196-F-83) notched 14. Lisvan Valdes (196-F-88) replied with 21 points.   [read more]

Belize loses heartbreaker to Cuba, 82-80 in second game of FIBA AmeriCup Pre-qualifier tournament - 28 days ago
Belize national team, coached by Milton Palacio , went down 82-80 to Cuba in a nailbiter at the Belize Civic Center this evening. Jasiel Rivero (204-C/F-93, agency: Pro Sports), Cuba's powerful center, led all scorers with 29 points and 9 rebounds. Belize trailed by 12 entering the fourth quarter but mounted a 9-2 run to close the gap to three points.
