We bring you last week's top performances from Cubans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Jasiel Rivero (204-93, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). He was the major contributor in a Boca Juniors' victory against one of league's weakest teams Libertad Sunchales (4-15) 82-78 in the Argentinian La Liga last Sunday. Rivero recorded 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Boca Juniors (12-8) is placed sixth in the La Liga. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Rivero has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 18.1ppg, 4.7rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 58.9%(109-185), 3FGP: 41.7% and FT: 69.4%. Rivero is currently a member of the Cuban senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international swingman Yorman Polas Bartolo (191-85, currently plays in Germany). He led Telekom Baskets to a 1-point victory against the 15th-ranked Crailsheim Merlins (5-17) 88-87 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. Bartolo scored 12 points. Telekom Baskets Bonn (11-10) is placed seventh in the BBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Bartolo's overall stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 53.1%, 3FGP: 28.3% and FT: 72.2%. He has a dual citizenship: Cuban and German. Bartolo played for the Cuban national team in 2011.

   #3. The Cuban player who performed third best last week abroad was an international shooting guard Karel Guzman (188-95, currently plays in Argentina). He could not help Olimpico de La Banda (9-10) in their last game. Despite Guzman's very good performance Olimpico de La Banda lost 70-74 on the road to the higher-ranked (#10) Comunicaciones. He was the top scorer with 19 points. Guzman also added 3 steals in 23 minutes. It was Olimpico de La Banda's third consecutive loss in a row. It's Guzman's first season with the team. This year his overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 3.1rpg, 2FGP: 52.2%, 3FGP: 37.5% and FT: 62.2% in 17 games he played so far. Guzman is also a member of the Cuban senior national team.

   #4. Center Javier Justiz (205-92, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help Zaragoza in their game against Movil Estudiantes (14-7) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. He recorded 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 16 minutes. Zaragoza lost 72-87 in Madrid to the much higher-ranked (#3) Movil Estudiantes. This year Justiz's total stats are: 5.7ppg and 3.8rpg in 22 games. He is also Cuban national team player.

   #5. Former international center Enrique Ramos (202-89, currently plays in Puerto Rico) contributed to a 2-point Cariduros' victory against the sixth-ranked Brujos (1-2) 95-93 in the Puerto Rican BSN in Friday night's game. Ramos scored 6 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and made 3 blocks. Cariduros de Fajardo (3-0) is placed second in the BSN. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Ramos has averaged so far 7.0ppg, 5.0rpg and 2.5bpg. He used to play for the Cuban national team seven years ago.

   #6. Forward Yoanki Mensia (197-97, currently plays in Argentina) managed to help Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia to win against the 12th-ranked Hispano Americano de Rio Gallegos (9-9) 75-73 in the Argentinian La Liga on Wednesday night. He scored only 2 points. Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia (13-7) is placed third in the La Liga. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Mensia has averaged so far 3.5ppg and 1.8rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Cuban National Team roster.

Former international power forward Grismay Paumier (205-88, currently plays in France) led Saint Chamond to a victory against the 15th-ranked Denain Voltaire (7-14) 78-70 in the French ProB (second division) in Tuesday night's game. Paumier scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 22 minutes. Saint Chamond Basket Valle du Gier (14-7) is placed fifth in the ProB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Paumier has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.2bpg in 18 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team ten years ago.

   #8. Forward Georvys Elias (199-81, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Daimiel (5-17) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the 16th-placed Daimiel (5-17) was edged 72-70 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Alcobendas (#9) in the Group B. Elias was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 8 rebounds. Elias has relatively good stats this season: 11.9ppg, 7.6rpg and 1.6apg. He used to play for the Cuban national team back in 2009.

   #9. Former international guard Reynaldo Garcia (187-90, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to Lenadores' victory against the second-ranked Mineros (30-10) 81-77 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Thursday. Garcia recorded 13 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in 38 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group North. Lenadores de Durango (25-14) is placed third. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. This year Garcia has relatively solid stats: 14.7ppg, 5.3rpg, 5.8apg and 2.5spg in 12 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team ten years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Cuban passport but never been selected to any of Cuban national teams:

   #1. Howard Sant-Roos (200-F-91, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) led his Greek team AEK to a victory against the fourth-ranked PAOK (8-6) 84-75 in the Basketball Champions League in Tuesday night's game. He recorded 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 35 minutes. AEK Athens (12-2) is placed first in group C. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Sant-Roos averages: 7.4ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.6apg and 1.6spg in 13 games he played so far.

   #2. Adrian Diaz (209-F/C-93, college: FIU, currently plays in Finland) could not help one of league's weakest teams Joensuun Kataja (16-11) in their last game. Despite Diaz's very good performance Joensuun Kataja lost 93-100 on the road to the higher-ranked (#4) BC Nokia. He was the top scorer with 19 points. Diaz also added 6 rebounds and 4 blocks in 26 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Diaz has relatively good stats this year: 14.5ppg, 4.5rpg, 1.6apg, 1.1bpg and 1.3spg in 11 games. He has a dual citizenship: Cuban and American. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. Strangely Diaz has never played in Cuba.

   #3. Juan Pineiro (193-G-90, currently plays in Puerto Rico) contributed to Brujos' victory against the closely-ranked Indios (1-2) 101-96 in the Puerto Rican BSN on Monday night. He scored 19 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists. Brujos de Guayama (1-2) is placed sixth in the BSN. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Pineiro has relatively good stats this year: 11.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 3.3apg and 1.7spg.

   #4. Yunio Barrueta (193-F/G-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Barry, currently plays in France) was not able to help Sluc Nancy (15-6) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Sluc Nancy lost 71-82 in Orleans to the leading Entente 45. Barrueta was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 3 assists in 29 minutes; not bad, considering it's only Barrueta's third season in pro basketball. It was Sluc Nancy's first loss after eight consecutive victories. Barrueta has relatively good stats this year: 11.3ppg and 3.8rpg in 20 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Cuban and American. Strangely Barrueta has never played in Cuba.

   #5. Darol Hernandez (206-F-89, currently plays in Belarus) contributed to an easy victory against the fourth-ranked Tsmoki II (10-14) crushing them 104-65 in the Belarusian Premier League last Wednesday. He scored 11 points. COR-Borisfen Mogilev (21-2) is placed first in Places 1-4 group. It was his team's 16th consecutive victory in a row. Hernandez has relatively good stats this season: 10.4ppg, 9.7rpg, 2.6apg and 1.6spg.

   #6. Juan Ferrales (187-G-91, college: Barry, currently plays in Norway) contributed to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked Centrum crushing them 103-79 in the Norwegian BLNO last Sunday. Ferrales had a double-double by scoring 11 points and making the same number of passes in 36 minutes. Ferrales has relatively good stats this year: 14.4ppg, 4.7rpg, 5.7apg and 1.6spg in 18 games. He has both American and Cuban nationalities. Strangely Ferrales has never played in Cuba.

   #7. Experienced Michel Espinosa (190-PG-0, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to secure a victory for La Union in their game against CA Platense in the Argentinian La Liga Argentina (second division). Espinosa scored 8 points. His team was edged 71-69. This season Espinosa averages only 2.2ppg.

   #8. Marlon Diaz (200-C-98, currently plays in Argentina) is a teammate of previously mentioned Michel Espinosa and both played together in the last Argentinian La Liga Argentina game. Diaz couldn't help La Union in their game against CA Platense. He cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. Diaz scored only 2 points in 8 minutes on the court. His team was edged 71-69. Diaz has averaged so far 3.7ppg and 3.6rpg in 30 games.

Villa Clara clinch Liga Superior title - 5 days ago
Villa Clara clinched Liga Superior de Baloncesto title as they beat Artemisa 3-1 in the Final series. Villa Clara closed the series with a 95-92 win. Andy Bofill top-scored for the winners with 34 points and Neslier Abreu (187-G-93) netted 26. Yoel Cubillas (204-C-94) followed them with 17 points in the winning effort. Osmel Oliva (178-PG-87) replied with 29 points in the losing effort.   [read more]
