We bring you last week's top performances from Cubans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Jasiel Rivero (204-93, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). He led Boca Juniors to a victory over the 16th-ranked Hispano Americano de Rio Gallegos (15-23) crushing them 86-65 in the Argentinian La Liga in Sunday night's game. Rivero was MVP of the game. He scored 26 points (!!!) and had 4 steals in 33 minutes on the court. Boca Juniors (20-18) is placed eighth in the La Liga. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Rivero's first season with the team. Rivero has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.9ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.4apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 57.8%(201-348), 3FGP: 38.8% and FT: 68.1% in 36 games he played so far. Rivero is currently a member of the Cuban senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international swingman Yorman Polas Bartolo (191-85, currently plays in Germany). Bartolo contributed to a Telekom Baskets' surprising victory against the league leader Bayern Muenchen (31-3) 102-98 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. He recorded 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Telekom Baskets Bonn (18-16) is placed seventh in the BBL. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Bartolo's overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 2.1apg, 2FGP: 52.1%, 3FGP: 29.3% and FT: 65.7%. He has a dual citizenship: Cuban and German. Bartolo played for the Cuban national team in 2011.

   #3. The Cuban player who performed third best last week abroad was an international shooting guard Karel Guzman (188-95, currently plays in Argentina). He could not help Olimpico de La Banda (18-20) in their last game on Monday. Despite Guzman's very good performance Olimpico de La Banda was edged 82-79 on the road by the higher-ranked Boca Juniors (#8). He was the second best scorer with 16 points. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Guzman's overall stats this season are: 8.9ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 52.8%, 3FGP: 32.1% and FT: 65.9%. He is also a member of the Cuban senior national team.

   #4. Center Enrique Ramos (202-89, currently plays in Puerto Rico) was not able to help Cariduros (13-14) in their last game. Despite Ramos' good performance Cariduros lost 104-108 in Quebradillas to the second-ranked Piratas. He had a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds in 30 minutes. Ramos has relatively good stats this year: 10.3ppg and 6.3rpg in 24 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team back in 2012.

   #5. International center Javier Justiz (205-92, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Spain) helped Zaragoza win their game against the 11th-ranked Burgos (13-19) 89-81 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Thursday. Justiz recorded 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Tecnyconta Zaragoza (16-15) is placed seventh in the Liga Endesa. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Justiz's overall stats this season are: 6.0ppg and 3.8rpg. He plays currently for the Cuban national team.

   #6. Forward Yoanki Mensia (197-97, currently plays in Argentina) managed to help Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia to win against the closely-ranked Obras Basket (22-16) 96-91 in the Argentinian La Liga in Sunday night's game. He scored 5 points. Gimnasia y Esgrima Comodoro Rivadavia (23-15) is placed third in the La Liga. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. Mensia's overall stats this season are: 4.5ppg and 2.2rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Cuban National Team roster.

   #7. Former international power forward Grismay Paumier (205-88, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for Saint Chamond (19-13) in their last game. Despite his good performance Saint Chamond lost 85-98 in Rouen to the second-ranked SPO Rouen. Paumier recorded 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 22 minutes. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. This year Paumier's overall stats are: 9.4ppg and 5.1rpg in 29 games. He used to play for the Cuban national team ten years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Cuban passport but never been selected to any of Cuban national teams:

   #1. Yunio Barrueta (193-F/G-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Barry, currently plays in France) led Sluc Nancy to a victory over the 14th-ranked Quimper UJAP (12-20) crushing them 110-72 in the French ProB (second division) last Tuesday. He was the best player in that game. Barrueta recorded 41 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Sluc Nancy Basket Pro (21-11) is placed fifth in the ProB. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Barrueta has relatively good stats this season: 12.7ppg and 4.0rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Cuban and American. Strangely Barrueta has never played in Cuba.

   #2. Ismael Romero (203-C-91, currently plays in Puerto Rico) was the major contributor in Vaqueros' victory against the closely-ranked Cariduros (13-14) 103-90 in the Puerto Rican BSN on Friday night. He scored 20 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 2 blocks in 31 minutes. Vaqueros de Bayamon (11-12) is placed second from the bottom (#8) in the BSN. Romero has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 16.4ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.9apg and 1.4spg in seven games he played so far.

   #3. Howard Sant-Roos (200-F-91, currently plays in Greece) managed to help AEK Athens in a victory against the league outsider Kolossos HH (4-21) crushing them 106-69 in the Greek A1 last Wednesday. He scored 5 points in 15 minutes. AEK Athens (18-8) is placed third in the A1. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. The Regular Season already ended. This year Sant-Roos' overall stats are: 6.6ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.4apg and 1.2spg in 24 games.

   #4. Darol Hernandez (206-F-89, currently plays in Belarus) could not help COR-Borisfen (26-4) in their last game. Despite Hernandez's good performance the first-placed COR-Borisfen (26-4) lost 64-76 at home to the second-ranked Tsmoki-Minsk in the Places 1-4 group. He was the second best scorer with 13 points. Hernandez also added 3 steals in 30 minutes. This year Hernandez has relatively solid stats: 11.9ppg, 8.6rpg, 2.3apg and 1.8spg in 22 games.

   #5. Sigfredo Casero-Ortiz (185-PG-97, currently plays in Belgium) was not able to help Okapi Aalstar in their game against Kangoeroes (12-22) in the Belgian Euromillions League. Casero-Ortiz scored 7 points and added 4 assists in 29 minutes. Okapi Aalstar was crushed 92-70 on the road by the lower-ranked (#8) Kangoeroes. It was Okapi Aalstar's fifth consecutive loss in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. This year Casero-Ortiz's overall stats are: 7.7ppg, 1.4rpg and 1.6apg in 33 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Cuban and Belgian.

   #6. Juan Pineiro (193-G-90, currently plays in Puerto Rico) was not able to secure a victory for Brujos in their game against Indios in the Puerto Rican BSN. Pineiro scored only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. His team was edged 71-68. Pineiro's overall stats this season are: 6.8ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.5apg.

   #7. Yankiel Moreno (189-G-90, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Italy) contributed to an easy victory against the 14th-ranked FCL Contract LG crushing them 86-63 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) last Monday. Moreno recorded 9 points and added 8 passes. Moreno's total stats this season are: 6.1ppg, 3.4rpg and 4.1apg. He has both Cuban and Italian nationalities. Despite Moreno's Cuban passport, he previously played for the Italian U18 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Cuban team.

Villa Clara clinch Liga Superior title - 4 days ago
Villa Clara clinched Liga Superior de Baloncesto title as they beat Artemisa 3-1 in the Final series. Villa Clara closed the series with a 95-92 win. Andy Bofill top-scored for the winners with 34 points and Neslier Abreu (187-G-93) netted 26. Yoel Cubillas (204-C-94) followed them with 17 points in the winning effort. Osmel Oliva (178-PG-87) replied with 29 points in the losing effort.   [read more]
