The all too familiar swishing sound of the ball going through the net, shoes squeaking on the surface and the cheers or even boos of the crowd. That's all ball. The 2017 FLOW National Basketball League is underway and the anticipation is already building. With a successful opening ceremony held over the weekend, the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association is tipping off the season with the annual President's Cup featuring the top teams from last season. During the official ceremony, President of the DABA, Jerry Williams, called on the athletes to preserve and promote the sport. He urged the veterans to embrace the young, talented ballers and set the right example. The opening ceremony incorporated basketball and entertainment, featuring the reigning Bouyon Monarch Queen Carlyn XP. This, according to Williams, will be a major part of what the association will provide throughout the season. Of course, the basketball fans got a chance to see the players showcase some of their talent, including the teams in the newly introduced Under-17 League. Fans were particularly impressed with the lady ballers who were fearless when pitted against the men. Round after round, fans glimpsed what each team had to offer, but in the end, only the Fast Cash Prowlers emerged victorious, defeating rivals D-Tread Blazers in the final. On Wednesday night, the first round in the President's Cup featured the Police Sports Club vs the Fashion Line Falcons. New to the Premier Division and without key players Kerry Christmas and Marlon Hilaire, Police went down to Falcons 21-88. The second game between the Fast Cash Prowlers and the Kelver Darroux Hurricanes was called off due to rain. That game will now be played on Thursday at 7pm and the winner will face the Falcons for the President's trophy on Saturday night following a bragging rights match scheduled by special request between the St Mary's Academy and 767 Sports Under-17 teams. Saturday's featured entertainment will be Mr Benji N2O. And some may turn up just for the entertainment, but one thing's for certain, they'll credit basketball for giving them the opportunity.
