Mauricio Baez lifts the trophy in Torneo Superior del Distrito Nacional - May 7, 2016
Mauricio Baez conquered its sixth ever title in the Dominican Republic's Torneo Superior del Distrito Nacional Virgilio Travieso Soto, by defeating San Carlos 82-71 in Game 4 of the 2016 Finals and completing a 4-0 sweep, in a tournament played to honor Hugo Cabrera.
It is the first chrown for Mauricio Baez since the 2000 season. Gerardo Suero (193-G-89, college: Albany, agency: Duran International) topped the scoring with 21 points and Oscar Balbuena (195-S/G-94) added 15 points and 8 rebounds, though Stanley Robinson (206-F-88, college: Connecticut, agency: HMS) was the one selected as Most Valuable Player of the Finals, getting 21 votes over Suero's 16, according to a press release of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal).
Coach Melvyn Lopez won his fourth title in the district and the third with Mauricio Baez of Villa Juana. His previous wins came in 1999, 2000 and 2008 (with San Lazaro). "To be able to win after 13 years of absence with the team of my neighborhood, my club, is something big", said Lopez.
PG Rayner Moquete (185-G-90, college: Binghamton) said that he was experiencing "a feeling that can't be defined" and an "unbelievable emotion". "We knew San Carlos was coming on strong but we took the challenge. We battled hard against them and history is now in our favor".
The best scorers for San Carlos were Victor Liz (188-SG-86) with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists and Edward Santana (203-F/C-80) with 19 points and 6 boards.
