AmeriCup Centrobasket Qualifiers: Pitts Leads Mexico Past Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic looked to have this one in hand early, building a six-point lead in the opening quarter at the Polideportivo Alexis Arguello on July 13, 2026. But Mexico responded before the break a Mayra Gil (174-G-2003) three with two seconds left in the second quarter flipped the score for good and never let go from there, extending the margin steadily through the second half for a 75-64 win.
Destiny Pitts (178-G-1999, college: Texas A&M) orchestrated the win with 22 points, nine assists and just a single turnover, delivering a nine-point burst late in the second quarter that swung momentum for good. Mariana Valenzuela (188-F-2003) added a monster double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, Anisa Jeffries (180-F-2004, agency: Daggers Sports) chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Gil provided 14 points off the bench. Cesarina Capellan (178-SF-2003) led the Dominican Republic with 21 points, eight rebounds and five steals, but it wasn't enough this time a first loss of the window for a Dominican side that had produced its own overtime-worthy heroics just a day earlier in the comeback win over the Bahamas.
