Which Latin American Rookie Impacts the 2026/27 NBA Season First?

Golden State's Mike Dunleavy didn't hold back on Yaxel Lendeborg. Through his first four Summer League games, the rookie forward shot 13-of-21 from three a scorching 61.9% and opened his professional career with a 21-point, 10-rebound, six-assist double-double against Dallas, punctuated by a highlight sequence against former Michigan teammate Morez Johnson Jr. that instantly circulated on social media.

His numbers would come back down over the next six games, the kind of natural descent that follows any hot start, but even as he settled, the Puerto Rican still finished with the highest BPM of any rookie in Summer League at 15.9, averaging 16.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.4 steals across five outings. Dunleavy was effusive when he spoke with ESPN's Dave McMenamin about his new forward's versatility, though the honeymoon came with caveats over-dribbling flagged as a concern, and Lendeborg himself admitting his conditioning still needs work.

Three time zones and one hamstring injury away, Karim López sat on a folding chair in Salt Lake City, watching his own draft class run up and down a court he couldn't step onto. Three months of rehab, three months of watching, before he finally gets eleven minutes against Atlanta on July 16 one shot, a miss, two blocks, a steal. Afterward, he spoke about what it meant just to be out there: "It's incredible to be able to represent Mexico. You can feel the people back there supporting me. It's a source of pride, it's beautiful, and it makes me very happy."

Eleven minutes doesn't sound like much. For a kid who spent his summer in a training room instead of a box score, it was everything he had. So, which of Latin America's two 2026 draftees will have the biggest impact in their rookie year next term?

Lendeborg's Unlikely Rise

Start with the strangeness of how Lendeborg even got here. Basketball wasn't the plan baseball was, growing up, and he was academically ineligible for most of high school, which meant junior college before UAB would even look at him.

Two years in Birmingham, and he's putting up a 15.8-and-11.0 double-double average, becoming the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 points and only the fifth to do it in two seasons. His senior year: 17.7 points, 11.4 boards, 4.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, 1.7 steals the kind of stat line that made him just the second Division I player ever to hit 600 points, 400 rebounds and 150 assists in a season. The only other name on that list is Larry Bird.

He tested the 2025 draft, then walked it back and transferred to Michigan instead and won a national title. Forty games, 39 starts, 15.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists on 51.5% shooting, Big Ten Player of the Year, All-Defensive honors. Nobody in the last forty years of college basketball has averaged 15/5/3/1/1 for a championship team except him.

So why did he fall to 11th overall? Well, because draft boards are strange, contradictory things reports had Charlotte, OKC, and Memphis all reportedly ready to trade up into the 15-18 range for him, and Golden State just sat at 11 and let the whole league sweat it out. Mike Dunleavy was practically gushing to ESPN's Dave McMenamin about what Lendeborg brings the versatility, the feel because a Warriors team with an aging core doesn't have the luxury of a five-year development plan. There's no runway left to burn.

Online betting sites think that Golden State's championship window may well have already closed. The latest odds from Lucky Rebel Sportsbook list them as a +3300 longshot to win the Finals next season. Lendeborg still needs to fix the over-dribbling and conditioning, but a team with no patience left doesn't draft a project. It drafts someone it thinks can play now.

López Becomes Mexico's First Draftee

López's road ran through a gym nobody in America was watching. Two seasons with the New Zealand Breakers on the NBL's Next Stars pathway 11.9 points, 6.1 rebounds on 49% shooting in just 25.6 minutes this year, setting the single-season Next Stars scoring record with 358 points and tying the combined steals-and-blocks mark at 66. That total passed the Next Stars records held by LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey, and Alex Sarr names that mean something here, put up on a stage that meant nothing to most draft boards until López forced the issue.

Memphis passing on a guard with Labaron Philon still on the board was its own small shock. Then Zach Kleiman traded back twice 16 to 17, then 17 to 21 turning one first-round pick into five extra second-rounders and still landing López anyway. Was that a GM finding value, or a GM buying himself cover for a reach?

Kleiman talked about the handle, the touch, the way López operates in tight spaces and gets all the way to the rim. His coach in New Zealand, Petteri Koponen, led with something else entirely: "He's a special talent and special guy. Everything comes down to: are you ready to put in the work, and this guy is ready." Notice what gets said first.

Memphis just traded away Ja Morant and Santiago Aldama. This isn't a team chasing October wins it's a team building around López and fellow rookie, number three overall Cam Boozer, for a window that might not open until 2028, with real G League minutes in between.
