Mairon Cuero
Forward Mairon Cuero (190-F-89) had a very impressive game in the last round for second-ranked Manabi, receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 5.
The 32-year old player had a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, while his team beat Guerreros (#3, 1-5) 93-87. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Manabi maintains the 2nd position in Ecuadorian National League. They would have been even better if they did not have these two lost games earlier in Regular Season. Manabi will need more victories to improve their 4-2 record. In the team's last game Cuero had a remarkable 85.7% from 2-point range. He turned to be Manabi's top player in his first season with the team. Mairon Cuero has solid league stats. He is league's best scorer averaging so far 22.3ppg. Cuero is in league's top in rebounds (3rd best: 9.3rpg) and averages impressive 65.4% FGP.
The second best player in last round's games was another Manabi's star - 27-year old American Telvin Gabriel (198-F-94). Gabriel had a very good evening with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. It was enough for Manabi to edge slightly lower-ranked Guerreros (#3, 1-5) 93-87. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Manabi consolidated its place in top 2 of the standings. His team's 4-2 record is not bad at all. Gabriel is a newcomer at Manabi, but is already one of team's top players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 17.0ppg (#4). He also registered 10.7 boards per game. Former Lander University star Gabriel is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market.
Third on the list of top players last round was former international Nixon Mina (205-C/F-90) of league's top team Santa Maria. Mina showcased his all-around game by recording 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the last round. He was a key player of Santa Maria, leading his team to a 73-60 easy win against #4 ranked Triple E-Uda. Santa Maria started extremely well this year. They recorded 6 victories without losing a single game. Mina turns to be one of the very best players in the league while he is also a leader of the top team having his eyes on the championship title. Mina has a great season in Ecuador. After only 5 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in assists with 2.0apg (9th best).
