Liga MB Round 5: Leader Santa Tecla gets another victory

Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Undefeated leader Santa Tecla delivered the sixth consecutive win on Wednesday night. This time they beat 5th ranked Brujos (2-3) 87-76. Santa Tecla forced 22 Brujos turnovers. The best player for the winners was Puerto Rican forward Owens Perez (203-92) who had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 26 rebounds. Guard Brian Vasquez (190) chipped in 25 points, 6 assists and 6 steals. American center Troidell Carter (206, college: Slippery Rock) produced a double-double by scoring 27 points and 17 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated Santa Tecla (6-0) have an impressive series of six victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with a perfect record of 6 victories in a row. Brujos at the other side keep the fifth position with three games lost. Santa Tecla are looking forward to face Fantasmas (#6) in San Vicente in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Brujos will play at home against Fantasmas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (0-5) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 122-73 loss to second ranked Santa Ana (5-1) in Santa Ana. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. The game was dominated by American players. Center Marc Montavious (206-90, college: Georgetown, KY) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 25 rebounds and 8 assists. Eddie Ishman contributed with 35 points (!!!) and 7 rebounds for the winners. Forward Marcus Feagin (192-91) answered with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 15 rebounds for Chalchuapa. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Santa Ana maintains second place with 5-1 record behind leader Santa Tecla. Chalchuapa lost their fifth game in a row. They still close the standings with five games lost. Santa Ana will play against Cojute (#4) in Cojutepeque in the next round. Chalchuapa will play at home against San Salvador (#3) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game in San Vicente supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Santa Ana (5-1) played at the court of 6th ranked Fantasmas (1-3). Santa Ana smashed Fantasmas 111-84 on Monday. Ron Lawton stepped up and scored 36 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds for the winners. Santa Ana's coach felt very confident that he used 11 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Bryan Masel responded with 26 points and 5 rebounds. Santa Ana maintains second place with 5-1 record behind leader Santa Tecla. Loser Fantasmas keep the sixth position with three games lost. Santa Ana will meet Cojute (#4) in the next round. Fantasmas will play against Brujos in Izalco and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 5 Aguila was crushed by San Salvador in a road game 102-71.
The best stats of 5th round was 34 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds by Julian Torres of San Salvador.



Fantasmas - Santa Ana 84-111

The game in San Vicente supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Santa Ana (5-1) played at the court of 6th ranked Fantasmas (1-3). Santa Ana smashed Fantasmas 111-84 on Monday. Santa Ana dominated down low during the game scoring 90 of its points in the paint compared to Fantasmas' 38. Santa Ana forced 19 Fantasmas turnovers and outrebounded them 56-38 including a 38-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. American forward Ron Lawton (196-95, college: NMHU) stepped up and scored 36 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds for the winners and his fellow American import Eddie Ishman (196-86, college: Miles) chipped in 22 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists. Santa Ana's coach felt very confident that he used 11 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Bryan Masel responded with 26 points and 5 rebounds and Luis Rivera scored 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Santa Ana maintains second place with 5-1 record behind leader Santa Tecla. Loser Fantasmas keep the sixth position with three games lost. Santa Ana will meet Cojute (#4) in the next round. Santa Ana - Chalchuapa 122-73

Bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (0-5) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 122-73 loss to second ranked Santa Ana (5-1) in Santa Ana. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. They dominated down low during the game scoring 82 of its points in the paint compared to Chalchuapa's 48. Santa Ana forced 26 Chalchuapa turnovers and outrebounded them 51-37 including 23 on the offensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Chalchuapa's players. The game was dominated by American players. Center Marc Montavious (206-90, college: Georgetown, KY) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 25 rebounds and 8 assists. San Salvador - Aguila 102-71

There was no surprise when 6th ranked Aguila (1-4) was crushed on the road by fourth ranked San Salvador (3-2) 102-71 on Thursday. San Salvador dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Aguila's 36. They outrebounded Aguila 42-31 including a 33-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. American-Puerto Rican forward Julian Torres (206-97, college: LSUA) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds (on 14-of-18 shooting from the field) for the winners and American Chris Blake (195-88, college: Detroit) chipped in 35 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 8 assists. San Salvador's coach felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Lee Vasquez (177-91) responded with 27 points and 5 assists and Cesar Marquina (190-97) scored 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. San Salvador moved-up to third place. Aguila lost their third game in a row. They dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. San Salvador will meet bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (#8) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Aguila will have a break next round.
