Liga MB Round 5: Cojute defeat Quezaltepeque in the closest game of the week- March 24, 2023
After 5 rounds played we can already see who rules in the Liga MB and who belongs to weaker ones. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.
Fantasmas - San Salvador 86-90 Liga MB top team - San Salvador (5-0) added another victory to their record. This time they beat sixth ranked Fantasmas (1-3) in San Vicente 90-86. Strangely Fantasmas outrebounded San Salvador 48-35 including 20 on the offensive glass. Panamanian Alejandro Grant (199-1993) nailed 38 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds for the winning side and American swingman Andravious Smith (198-1995, college: Tougaloo) accounted for 27 points and 8 rebounds. American guard Caleb Bowser (193, college: Georgian Court) came up with a double-double by scoring 38 points (!!!) and 19 rebounds and the other American import Nick Moore (198-1991, college: Alliance) added 21 points and 12 rebounds respectively for Fantasmas in the defeat. Fantasmas' coach Julio Villalta rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. San Salvador have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 5-0 record. Fantasmas at the other side dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Quezaltepeque. San Salvador will play against Santa Ana (#9) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Fantasmas will play against Santiagueno in Usultan and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Santa Tecla dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Santa Ana's 28 and made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Santa Ana 51-27 including a 22-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. Santa Tecla looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was Dominican Darwin Cabrera who had a double-double by scoring 26 points and 20 rebounds. Center Carlos Arias (200-1989) chipped in 19 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). American guard Anthony Strickland (196-1993, college: EMU) produced 16 points and Gerardo Zaldivar (-2000) added 16 points respectively for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Santa Tecla. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Metapan. Santa Ana lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the ninth position with four games lost. Santa Tecla will meet at home Quezaltepeque (#8) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Santa Ana will play against the league's leader San Salvador and hope to win that game. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 7th ranked Quezaltepeque (1-3) to eighth ranked Cojute (2-2) 76-73 on Tuesday evening. Cojute outrebounded Quezaltepeque 44-27 including 30 on the defensive glass. American guard Jeremy Agosto (177-1997, agency: The French Family Consulting) stepped up and scored 23 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals for the winners and his fellow American import forward Chase Berry (198-1998, college: Utah Tech) chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dominican forward Rayner Moquete (185-1990, college: Binghamton) responded with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists and naturalized Canadian Jose Araujo (187-1986, college: UNBC, agency: Interperformances) scored 20 points. Cojute moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Santiagueno. Quezaltepeque at the other side keeps the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Fantasmas. Cojute will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Quezaltepeque will play on the road against Santa Tecla (#3) and is hoping to win this game. Brujos dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Chalchuapa's 28. Brujos forced 22 Chalchuapa turnovers and outrebounded them 50-25 including a 19-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was point guard Francisco Angulo (179-1989) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 assists. Dominican forward Juan De Los Santos (193-2002) chipped in 26 points and 6 rebounds. American point guard Robert Story (183, college: WSSU) produced 31 points and 5 assists and the other American import Gorg Alhag (190-1997, college: Mayville St.) added 21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 blocks respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Brujos moved-up to fourth place. Chalchuapa lost their fifth game in a row. They still close the standings with five games lost. Brujos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Chalchuapa will play against the league's second-placed Metapan (#2) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
