United States team proved their All-Star status yesterday as they gave no
chances for Argentinean squad in the title decider in Las Vegas. USA completed
their perfect campaign with another comprehensive victory and ended the
competition at 10-0 record. Both finalist however guaranteed their places in the
Beijing Olympics.
United States players were dominant right from the start. They once again could
hardly miss from all the ranges and piled up a 35:14 lead after the first frame.
Argentina simply were unable to match the tempo and the gap grew wider in the

Brazil started the game more aggressively and spurred ahead to 22:17 lead after
the first frame. A nice shooting accuracy helped Brazilian players held on to
the gap and extend it to 43:35 at hafltime. Though it was as far as they could
get yesterday's evening. Argentina came off the dressig room ready to battle and
performed a first-class basketball in the third term. They limited their

they occupied the last spot in Group A. Argentina meanwhile posted their fourth
consecutive victory and completed the preliminary round on top of the ladder.
Panama needed to win this one to hope to advance but had no luck yestrerday's
evening. Argentinean players dominated the game right from the start and easily
cleared off to a 30:18 distance after the opening frame. Panama fought fiercely
in the second quarter and tightened the defence, which resulted in Argentina
scoring just 13 points and Panama cutting the deficit to 7 points at halftime
36:43. The things started to look Panamanian way after the break as

Panama - Mexico 95:90
Panamanian National team gained their first win at the Fiba Americas
championship in Las Vegas. After two starting losses Panama finally delivered
edging Mexico 95:90. Mexico meanwhile suffered their first defeat at the
tournament and fell to 1-1 record in Group A.
The teams opened the game playing close basketball as no side managed to clear
off. The teams entered the second quarter all square 29:29. Panama spurred ahead
in the second frame as
J.R. Pinnock (196-G-83, college:
George Washington) sparked his teammates to a 25:18 rally to establish a 54:47 lead
at halftime.
Mexico tried to pave their way back after the break and outscored Panama 25:24
in the third term. But Panama withstood a fierce attempts from Mexican teams and
enjoyed the first success at the tournament.

Argentinean National team extended their winning streak to 2 games after they
edged Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican team entered the game brave enough and rolled to
a 27:17 advtantage early on. But Argentina quickly regained the initiative and
cut the deficit to 35:39 at halftime. They later surged ahead to a 7-point lead
and never allowed Puerto Rico to answer at the dying stages. Luis Scola (206-F/C-80) paced Argentina with 22 points and 11 boards.

Panama - Puerto Rico 67:108
Panamanian team suffered their second straight loss at the Fiba Americas
tournament in Las Vegas. Yesterday they were rallied over by Puerto Rico and
remained at the bottom of Group A ladder. Panama could not match super attacking
basketball proposed by Puerto Rican team and trailed right from the start. Five
Puerto Rican players scored in double digits to pace their side to a
comprehensive win.
Panama were outscored 20:28 in the opening frame and never recovered afterwards.
Puerto Rico easily established a 53:31 lead at halftime and completely dominated
the game after the break. They nailed 55 points in the second half ans secured a
stunning win to rebound after a loss from USA. Ricardo Sanchez (-G) topscored for Puerto Rico with 19 points.

Uruguay - Argentina 69:90
Uruguay National team could not extend their winning streak as they fell short
to Argentina yesterday. Argetina meanwhile opened their campaign with a victory
and hope to challenge USA on Las Vegas scene. Argentina built a safe lead after
the first frame 23:13 but Uruguay remained in contest cutting it to 35:42 at
halftime. But Argentinean players proved the difference in the third quarter
outscoring their Southern neighbours 29:14 and cruising to an overall victory at
the end.
Pablo Prigioni (186-G-77) led Argentina with 20 points.
Luis Scola (206-F/C-80) secured another 16 points for the winners.
Emilio Taboada (193-F-82) paced Uruguay with 14 points.

Mexico - Puerto Rico 100:89 Mexican team came up with arguably the biggest surprise of Day 1 action
as they toppled Puerto Rico in Group A action. A well-balanced Mexican offence
overwhelmed Puerto Rican defence and left them behind.
