Luis Scola (206-F/C-80) scored 32 points to help Argentina beat
Brazil
80-75on Sunday in the
championship game of the Olympic basketball qualifying tournament for
the Americas.
Carlos Delfino (198-G-82) added 16 points for Argentina in the game
that was mostly for pride after both teams earned spots in the London
Olympics with their semifinal victories.
In the third-place game,
Alfred Horford (208-F/C-86, college:
Florida) scored 23 for the Dominican Republic in a
103-89victory over Puerto
Rico The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela - by claiming
spots three, four and five in the tournament - earned places in a
qualifying tournament just before the Olympics.
The United States qualified for London by winning last year's world
championship.

Brazil and Argentina picked up victories Saturday to claim berths in
next year's London Olympics.
Brazil defeated the Dominican Republic
83-76, and Argentina beat
Puerto Rico
81-79 in the semi-finals of
the Olympic basketball qualifying for the Americas.
The two finalists meet Sunday and qualify automatically for London. The
third through fifth-placed teams earn spots in a qualifying tournament
just before the games, which will award several more berths for London.
Venezuela claimed the fifth-placed spot.
The United States won the world championship last year and has already
qualified for London.
Brazil and Argentina were the two favoured teams in the tournament and
had the best records in two rounds of qualifying..
We have realized a dream, Machado said. We have worked hard for this,
and this is a prize for effort and talent.
The Dominican Republic led twice by three points in the second quarter,
but trailed 39-36 at the break. The game was always close and the
Dominican Republic drew level at 45 after a basket by Horford with 5:01
left in the third quarter.
Argentina just did enough to win their semi-final after fighting back
from 48-40 down in the third quarter.
Puerto Rico tied the game at 79-79 on Daniel

Uruguay - Venezuela 80-92
Venezuela did a great job in Mar del Plata. They outplayed Uruguay 92-80
in their last game to finish with 3-4 record. It is enough for the fifth
place, which secured Venezuela a ticket for the Olympic Qualifying
Tournament next year. Uruguay finished as seventh ranked team with 1-6
score.

game of the Quarterfinals Round in Mar del Plata. Argentina jumped to
6-1 and advanced to Semifinals as the second ranked team. Argentineans
will play against Puerto Rico at the next stage. Dominican Republic
slipped to 4-3 score (4th place) and will meet Brazil in the Semis.
Finalists will book a spot for the Olympic Games 2012 in London.
