Universo/BRB Brasilia won the second edition of the FIBA Americas League by
winning the Final Four held in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. The Brazilian team
defeated host

Xalapa UV Xalapa 86-83 in the third and final day of the competition.
Valtinho led the winners with 21 points while
Alexandre Garcia (191-G-80, agency:
Interperformances), who was named MVP of the tournament, had 19 points, 6
rebounds and 6 assists. Arthur Luiz netted 13 points and Estevam Ferreira 10.

Xalapa started the game with an aggressive attack led by

and Ray Castillo to give the host a 29-19 lead.

basket for the 29-19 score. The Mexicans shot 11-16 from the field including 4-8
from three point range and 3-4 from the free throw line. Valtinho had 9 of the
19 points scored by the Brazilian team.

pointer by
Victor Mariscal (198-F-72) but Valtinho along with Alex and Rafael Mineiro
started to cut the lead, including a 9-0 run, to finish at halftime 49-43 in
favor of the host.

Victor Mariscal and Gustavo Ayon with 8 points each. Valtinho and Alex led
the attack for the team from Brasilia with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The second half started with an effective attack by

Xalapa with two pointers by Gustavo Ayon and three point baskets by Abdul
Mills and Victor Avila to have a 59-47 lead. Universo answered with four three
pointers in a row to tie the game at 59 at the half point of the third quarter.
The three pointers continued falling for Universo who had a 70-67 lead at the
end of the quarter.
Both teams struggled in the start of the fourth quarter showing good intensity
on the defensive side.

Xalapa and Universo exchanged the lead many times but the Brazilian team
lost Diego Pinheiro and Rafael Mineiro due to foul trouble. At the end

Xalapa forced some plays and lost the opportunity to win the title while
Estevam and Valtinho gave Universo the win from the free throw line.

the tournament with a tough win over Pitagoras/Minas.

their Brazilian rivals Minas in Xalapa.

good in the fourth period. Diego Pinheiro contributed 16 points for the winners.

the new Champion of America in the Final Four of the FIBA Americas League.
Minas comes from winning Group A with a team that has stars like Murilo Becker,
Facundo Sucatzky, Leandro Silva and Joe
Shipp. The team from Belo Horizonte had a 2-1 record with wins over Merengueros
and Pioneros de Quintana Roo. In the
final game they lost to Capitanes de Arecibo but passed to the final round due

Bigua became the first undefeated champion of a group after beating
defending champion Pearol Mar del Plata, South
Americn League champion, Regatas de Corrientes and Deportes Castro from Chile.

Halcones UV Xalapa dominated Group D with wins over Quimsa Santiago del
Estero, COOPENAE Liceo de Costa
Rica and Soles de Mexicali.

Xalapa have a 44-2 record in the Mexican League which is one of the fastest
growing leagues
in America. Players like Leroy Hickerson, Abdul Mills, Victor Mariscal, Victor
vila and Gustavo Ayn make this team one
of the most exciting to watch. They also have former UCLA star Lorenzo Mata who
could not participate due to an injury.
The 2009 Final Four will be played in a Round Robin format on February 6, 7, and

The winning streak was snapped by the hosting Capitanes de Arecibo but it did

win by at least 15 points to overcome Minas in the ladder but they stopped a
whisker away from the goal. Buster Figeroa missed one free throw with 11 seconds
left in regulation and Capitanes won by just 14 points to seal Final Four birth
for Minas.
Joseph Shipp produced 23 points for the Brazilian team in the game.
Murilo da Rosa added 22 points in defeat.
Bigua was an obvious winner of Group B. They overcame all of their opponents
winning all three games and eased to the Final Four stage.

was among the topscorers in the competition as he boasted with a 35-tally
against Penarol Mar Del Plata.
Group C was another tight affair with the outcome unknown till the final buzzer
of the last game. Universo/BRB lost the opening game against their archrivals
Flamengo but still managed to recover and earned the ticket to the Final Four
stage. They narrowly defeated Deprtes Castro from Chile and stunned Libertad
Sunchales to secure the next round birth.
Alexandre Garcia (191-G-80, agency:
Interperformances) led the charge for Universo/BRB in these games. His late
three-pointer propelled the team past Deportes Castro in the must-win fixture on
the last day of the action.

Braggs finished as the best rebounder with an average of 10 per game and was
followed by Carlos Paniagua (Merengueros) and Jeff Aubry (Capitanes) with 9.7
per game. Buster Figueroa averaged 7.7 and Murilo Becker (Minas) 7 to be between
the leaders of the league.
In assists the leader was Facundo Sucatzky who averaged 11.7 and was followed by
his partner Luiz Felipe Campos and Rafael 'Pachy' Cruz (Capitanes) with 4.7 per
game. In the first edition of the FIBA Americas League Sucatzky finished as the
leader with an average of 9.6 assists in eight games.
The FIBA Americas League continues on Tuesday, December 16 with Group B to be
played at Polideportivo de Islas Malvinas in Mar del Plata with the
participation of Pearol (defending champion), Regatas Corrientes (South American
League Champion), Bigu (South American Championship for Clubs champion) and
Universidad de Concepcin.

schedule. - Dec. 8, 2008 The
International Basketball Federation of Americas (FIBA Americas), with offices in
San Juan, Puerto Rico, announced the schedule for the II FIBA Americas League
2008/2009.
Because of the national and international calendars, the 2008/2009 FIBA Americas
League will have a new competition system.
The second edition will have 16 teams, the same as the first edition and the
first group starts on December 9 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The competition ends
on the first week of February, 2009.
There will be two group stages in the South and two in the North being the first
two on December, 2008 and two in January, 2009.
The winners from each group will qualify for the Final Four stage to be played
from February 6-8, 2009.
Like the first edition, all the games will be televised on FOX Sports in America
and live stats and news will be available on www.fibaamericas.com.
The countries confirmed for the 2008/2009 FIBA Americas League are: South
America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay; For Central America and the
Caribbean: Costa Rica, Mxico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
The FIBA Americas League is the most important club competition in America. In
their first edition the winners was Pearol Mar del Plata of Argentina.
