USA wins Gold on FIBA Americas U16
Championship - Aug. 15, 2009 USA destroyed Canada 103-52 in the Big Final of
FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Mexico City grabbing the gold medal.
Both teams entered to this game undefeated, but USA demonstrated way
better performance last night. After opening ten minutes it was 27-20
and until the half time USA jumped to magnificent 56-29. Second half was
just the formality as the gold medal winner was already known.
Elizabeth Williams (-92) led Americans with 19 points.
Justine Hartman (-92) was behind her with 14. Canada got 12 points
from
Nirra Fields (170-G-93).
In the battle for bronze medal Argentina outplayed Brazil 64-47. After
20 minutes of the game it was already clear who the winner will be as
Argentina already created huge 30-11. It is interesting that Argentina
drained 10 triples in the first half.
Melisa Gretter (-92) stepped up for Argentina with 20 points and
Carolina Belen had 13. In a losing effort Ramona Macedo had 12 points.
The fifth place belongs to Mexico, who was better than Puerto Rico
72-56.
Dominican Republic is No.7 after its first win on this event, Dominican
Republic - Guatemala 65-57.
It is very important to mention that USA, Canda and Argentina
booked a spot for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship.
Summary of the Semifinals in Mexico City - Aug.
14, 2009 As it was expected, USA and Canada advanced to
Big Final of FIBA Americas U16 Championship. These two teams
demonstrated way better performance than all other participants in
Mexico City and totally deserved to meet each other in battle for the
Gold. There is another important thing, with this success USA and Canada
booked a spot for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. Two teams who
are eliminated in the Semifinals, Argentina and Brazil, will also have a
chance to appear on this event. That depends of today's game for third
place in Mexico City (Bronze).
Team USA smashed Brazil yesterday 105-54 mostly owing to Kaleena Jordan
Lewis and Ariel Chanel Massengale, who scored 24 and 23 points
respectively.
Canada outplayed Argentina 66-59. Alexandra Jubilee Der top-scored for
the winners with 17, while Shalie Richelle Dheensaw added one point
less. Julieta Vazquez shined in loss delivering 22 points.
In classification games for 5-8 place Rico beat Guatemala 45-39 and
Mexico dominated against Dominican Republic 121-38.br>
Today USA will meet Canada for the Gold at 20:00h. Two hours before that
Argentina will take on Brazil for the Bronze.
We will have two more games today. For the fifth place Puerto Rico will
player against the hosts, Mexico. Guatemala and Dominican Republic will
try to avoid the last place on this event.
Summary of the Preliminary Round in Mexico
City - Aug. 13, 2009 Preliminary Round in over in Mexico City. Canada
and USA demonstrated the best performance so far and they are on top of
their groups.
Canada outplayed Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala in Group A for perfect
3-0. From this pool Brazil also advanced to Semifinals with 2-1 record.
The crucial game for Brazilians was the one against Mexico. The host of
this event faced with 62-66 defeat, falling to third place.
In Group B, USA registered perfect 3-0 record. The Americans outplayed
Argentina, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. The second team from this
pool who advanced to Semifinals is Argentina. Crucial win for Argentina
was the one against Puerto Rico 78-53. That was on Day 1.
The Semifinals are scheduled for today. Naturally No.1 of Group A,
Canada, will meet No.2 of Group B, Argentina. The Americans will play
against Brazil. Canada and USA are favorites and it will be a big
surprise if one of these two teams fail to reach the Big Final.
