USA - Brazil 76-20
USA U16 won their opener of the FIBA Americas U16 Championship. The team destroyed Brazil U16 76:20 in Day 1 and proved their ambitions to defend the title this season. USA U16 erupted with a 24-5 lead in the first period and never looked behind after. They added 24-4 in the second quarter and grabbed a 48:9 lead at the halftime. USA did not decide to slow down and won also both quarters in the second half. The favorites posted a 15-5 surge in the third quarter and finished the game with a 13-6 rally. Asia Durr (180-G-97) top-scored for the winners with 20 points and Katie Samuelson (191-G/F-97) notched 9. Dejanae Boykin delivered 8, while Lauren Cox (193-F-98) posted 7. Aline De Moura (185-F/C-97) nailed 5 and Wytalla Motta scored 4 points in defeat. In Day 2 USA will take on Argentina, while Brazil will play against Costa Rica.
Costa Rica - Argentina 41-61
Argentina opened their FIBA Americas U16 Championship campaign with victory. They dealt with Costa Rica in Cancun to improve at 1-0 record in Group A. Sofia Giannini (159-G-97) dropped 16 points to lead the winners. Costa Rica led by a single point 11:10 ten minutes into the game. Argentina slowly adjusted their tempo. They pulled in front in the second period. Argentina grabbed a 23:20 halftime lead. They limited Costa Rica to only 7 points in the third period to ensure a 10-point buffer before the fourth stanza 37:27. Argentina unloaded 24 points in the final period to cruise to the victory. Rosario De Leon (183-F-97) posted 9 points, while Luciana Delabarba had 8 points in the win. Paula Mora (169-SF-97) answered with 11 points for Costa Rica. Daniela Quesada had 9 points in the loss.
Group B
Puerto Rico - Mexico 59-67
Mexico overcame Puerto Rico in Day 1 of the FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Mexico posted a 67:59 win and started with a 1-0 record. Mexico pulled a 20-14 lead in the first period and dominated the first half. They added a 15-9 rally in the second frame for 35:23 at the halftime. Puerto Rico was however too far to give up and replied with a 20-12 burst in the third period. Mexico meanwhile finished the game with a 20-16 rally and sealed a victory in the opener. Nayeli Ortiz (174-SF-98) stepped up with 20 points for the winners and Celilly Telles (174-SF-99) nailed 9. Huidobro Jusseth, Mazzocco Viridiana and Mazzocco Carmelina poured in 8 points each. Lyanne Liciaga (163-SG-97) answered with 19 points in the losing effort, while Patricia Nieves (178-C-97) had 14. Perez Giolibeth added 10, while Gileysa Penzo brought 8.
Venezuela - Canada 23-94
Canada claimed a comprehensive victory on the opening day of the U16 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico. They thumped Venezuela to gain the lead in Group B. Danielle Garven (185-G/F) tossed in 16 points to lead the winners. Canada did not waste time firing to a 23:5 lead at the first intermission. The North American team kept Venezuela scoreless in the second period gaining a 47:5 halftime lead. Canada triggered a 31:11 rally in the third term to boost the advantage. They kept Venezuela at bay throughout the fourth frame and coasted to the victory. Hailey Brown (185-F) finished with 11 points and 11 boards, while Lauren Yearwood added 11 points for the winning team. Annely Espinoza (171-SF-97), Edmari Gil and Laury Garcia answered with 5 points each in the loss.
