Asia Durr (180-G-97) and Katie Samuelson (191-G/F-97) combine for 50 points to defend the title with USA at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women. The latter overcame Canada 82:48 in the Final game to clinch another title. It was a great start for Canada that did not allow the favorites to dominate the court in the first half. Both teams scored 9 points each in the first period and then added 18 points apiece in the second frame. The third quarter was decisive in the game as USA erupted with a 31-7 surge for the final lead. They also added 24-14 in the last period to seal the victory. Asia Durr paced all the winners with 26 points and Katie Samuelson added 24. Cox Lauren collected 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Dangerfield Crystal notched 8. Lauren Yearwood (191-C) replied with 15 points for Canada that finished second. Brown Hailey notched 12 and Charleton Bridget poured in 9.
3-4 Place
Brazil - Mexico 70-56
Brazil clinch Bronze at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women. The team overcame Mexico 70:56 in the game for the 3-4 places. It was Mexico to take control of the first half. The team grabbed a 16-14 lead at the end of the first period and led 2 points at the halftime. Brazil however needed a strong second half to win the game. They won the third period 14-9 and added 26-15 in the last period. Wytalla Motta (182-F/C-97) top-scored for the winners with 18 points and Mariane De Carvalho (182-F-97) netted 15. Alexandrino Fabiola delivered 13, whilst Carneiro Larissa scored 7. Nayeli Ortiz (174-SF-98) finished the game with 12 points as Mexico finished on a high 4th place. Martin Carlota delivered 10 and Mazzocco Viridiana had 9.
5-6 Place
Venezuela - Puerto Rico 60-84
Puerto Rico claimed the fifth overall position at the U16 FIBA Americas Championship. They held off Venezuela on the final day of the tournament in Cancun. Gladyshka Gerena (165-PG-97) notched 17 points to lead the winners. Puerto Rico set the tone early in the game. They went on a massive 26:10 rally in the opening frame. Puerto Rico stayed in the commanding lead throughout the second quarter. They established a massive 46:21 halftime lead. But Venezuela struck right back in the third term. They sparked a 20:9 run in the period to cut the distance. Puerto Rico answered with a 29-point outburst in the final period and sealed the victory. Lizdania Marrero (178-SF-98) contributed 12 points for Puerto Rico. Anybeth Barrios and Diadenis Vitrago chipped in 6 points each for Venezuela. Laury Garcia (174-SF-97) produced 13 points in the loss.
7-8 Place
Argentina - Costa Rica 58-29
Argentina occupied the seventh overall position at the U16 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico. They knocked down Costa Rica on the final day of the tournament. Julieta Giorgetti (180-C-97) stepped up with 12 points and 6 boards to lead the winners. Argentina took a 17:10 lead after the opening quarter. They limited Costa Rica to just 3 points in the second period building a 29:13 halftime lead. Costa Rica tried to return into the contest in the third term. They narrowed the gap at 15-point mark before the fourth frame. But Argentina capped the regulation with a 16:2 run to seal the victory. Ana Paz (178-F-97) notched 10 points and 11 boards, while Martina Rodriguez added 10 points for the winners. Kathylee Pinnock (163-SG-98) answered with 10 points for Costa Rica. Paula Mora chipped in 7 points in the loss.
