Argentina - USA 48-80 The USA recorded the first victory at the tournament. They knocked down Argentina for 1-0 record in Group A. Andra Espinoza-Hunter (180-F) and Alexis Morris (168-G) connected for 16 points each to pace the winners. Honesty Scott-Grayson (178-G) added 10 points and 7 rebounds for the USA. Amaiquen Siciliano (165-G-99) responded with 10 points for Argentina. Valentina Silva (173-F-99) netted 9 points in the loss.
Mexico - Honduras 74-45 Mexico victoriously opened their campaign in Puebla. The hosts fired past Honduras in Group A opener. Maria Ruiz (171-SG) scored 24 points to lead the hosts. Honduras built a 15:10 lead after the opening quarter. However the hosts quickly picked up the tempo. They went on a strong 46:21 run in the second half to seal the victory. Martha Barberio (167-SG) delivered 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Danna Grenald (183-PF-99) responded with 14 points and 23 rebounds for Honduras. Nelly Leva (171-PG) had 14 points in the loss.
Group B
Cuba - Canada 43-85 Canada eased past Cuba in the opening game in Puebla. Alyssa Jerome (185-C) tallied 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the North American team. Canada built a 33:25 halftime lead. They went on a stunning 28:11 run in the third term to clear off for good. Macaela Crone (185-C) finished with 13 points for Canada. Elianis Armentero (175-PF) responded with 19 points for Cuba.
Venezuela - Brazil 40-84 Brazil registered the opening victory at the FIBA Americas Championship. They beat Venezuela for 1-0 record in Group B. Izabela Nicoletti (170-G-99) scored 18 points to lead Brazil. They led from start to finish in this one. Brazil accumulated a comfortable 44:17 halftime lead. They went on a 40:23 second half surge to seal the victory. Obalunanma Ugwu (181-F) tossed in 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. Luisanny Zapata (165-SG) responded with 9 points for Venezuela.
