USA crushed Chile in their FIBA Americas Championship opener. USA dominated from start to finish. They registered a massive 59-10 halftime lead. USA added 58 points in the second half to cruise to the victory. JuJu Watkins (183-G-05) delivered 21 points and 10 steals for the winners. Vania Vega (SG-05) answered with 8 points for Chile.
Puerto Rico - Costa Rica 60-45
Puerto Rico overcame Costa Rica in the opener. Paloma Garcia scored 13 points to pace the winners. Puerto Rico grabbed a 34-21 halftime lead. They went on a 21-13 rally in the third period to clear off for good. Dianne Crespo (06) and Nicole Carreno (05) accounted for 10 points each in the win. Raquel Cordero (153-PG-05) and Shaima James (175-C-05) responded with 11 points each for Costa Rica.
Mexico - Argentina 66-58
Mexico held off Argentina to take 1-0 record in Group B. Mexico jumped off to a 20-8 lead after ten minutes. Argentina pulled within 8 points at the big break. The teams traded baskets throughout the second half as Mexico rallied to the win. Valeria Flores (179-SG-05) produced 20 points, while Gizel Navarro (160-PG-05) banked in 13 points for the hosts. Angelina Giacone (181-F-05) answered with 12 points for Argentina.
Canada - Brazil 82-56
Canada outscored Brazil to celebrate the first win in Guanajuato. Canada went on a 33-13 run in the first period to secure a comfortable lead. They maintained the advantage throughout the reminder of the contest and eased to the win. Cassandre Prosper (188-SF-05) produced 24 points and 9 rebounds, while Delaney Gibb (181-SG-05) added 14 points for the North American team. Taissa Nascimento (178-SF-05) answered with 16 points and 9 rebounds for Brazil.
