Recap of Day 1 in Merida

Mexico - Colombia 59-67
Colombia victoriously opened their campaign. They upset hosting Mexico in the opener. Maria Perez (162-G-2007) stepped up with 18 points to lead the effort. Colombia opened a 45-30 halftime lead. Mexico narrowed the deficit in the second half but could not avoid the loss. Sandra Acuna (168-G-2007) nailed 16 points for Mexico.

USA - Puerto Rico 124-39
USA coasted past Puerto Rico in the first game in Merida. The North American side piled up a massive 68-18 halftime lead and cruised to the victory in the second half. Jerzy Robinson (185-G-2008) topscored with 21 points for the USA. Trinity Jones (185-G-2007) contributed 19 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Desirek Nieves (170-SG-2007) had 8 points for Puerto Rico.

Canada - Brazil 69-37
Canada thumped Brazil to open win count at the tournament. Savannah Swords (182-F-2008) scored 12 points to lead the winners. Canada posted a 33-25 halftime lead. They held Brazil to just 12 points in the second half to ease to the win. Chance Berry added 10 points for Canada. Nicolly Sanches (166-PG-2007) and Giovana De Freitas (186-C-2007) had 7 points apiece for Brazil.

Dominican Republic - Argentina 62-72
Argentina rolled over Dominican Republic to secure the first win in Mexico. Milagros Morell (191-F-2007) and Rocio Leta (162-PG-2007) notched 17 points apiece in the victory. Argentina led by just one point at halftime 32-31. But they went on a 15-8 run in the third period to clear off for good. Sol Depetris (170-SG-2007) had 16 points for Argentina. Leila Nunez (185-SG-2007) had 18 points and 7 rebounds for Dominican Republic.
